The Service & Team: An opportunity has arisen for you to join us as an Attendance Improvement Officer at Cornwall Council. Working within the Attendance Team as part of the Education Welfare Service, the role will involve working with schools in a specific area to provide support and guidance to schools and school leaders. You will be responsible for termly Targeting Support Meetings where you will work with schools to ensure that a plan of support is put in place for severely absent pupils and liaise with other agencies to facilitate that appropriate multi‑disciplinary support is available for each case. You will also work with schools in looking at their current attendance position to discuss emerging patterns or issues. You will be the named point of contact for your schools to support with queries and advice. You will ideally be an experienced children’s practitioner with an education setting. If you are innovative, positive, dedicated and not afraid of change or challenge, this position will enable you to work alongside schools and other agencies towards a shared goal of improving attendance and outcomes for children and young people across the county.

You will be able to work independently, have access to transport, and be able to travel within the county. This post is 37 hours per week on a term‑time only basis. It is a public/customer‑facing role, so the statutory English language requirement for public sector workers applies. The position will be subject to an enhanced criminal record disclosure check.
What you’ll need to succeed:
- Experience working within an education, pastoral, or student‑support environment, with an understanding of the challenges that affect pupil engagement and attendance.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build trusting, professional relationships with school leaders, colleagues and multi‑agency professionals.
- Confident in working with school leaders to provide guidance and advice, keep, manage workload, and prioritise tasks effectively.
- Ability to analyse information and spot patterns or concerns, including the use of basic data to inform decisions and actions.
- Awareness of safeguarding principles and a willingness to follow procedures and seek guidance when concerns arise.
- Competence in using digital tools and management systems, including Microsoft 365 and school‑based platforms, or a willingness to learn.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively, using initiative while contributing positively to a wider team and multi‑agency working.
- A problem‑solving, child‑centred approach, with a commitment to inclusion and removing barriers to education.
