About The Role
As a General Operative, you will play an essential hands‑on role in delivering high‑quality highway construction and maintenance services across the Warwickshire and Solihull contract. Based in Coleshill, Warwickshire, this is a field‑based position requiring you to work across all areas of the contract.
Reporting to the Line Manager/Supervisor, you will use your practical skills and experience to carry out a wide range of highway maintenance and civils tasks safely, efficiently, and to the highest standards. You will contribute to keeping roads, footways, and highways infrastructure in excellent condition while embedding a strong culture of health, safety, quality, and customer service.
This is a physically active role involving outdoor work in all weather conditions, including participation in emergency and winter service provision. You will be part of a team that takes pride in delivering reliable public infrastructure services for Warwickshire County Council and Solihull clients.
What you’ll be doing
As a General Operative you’ll
- Carry out a broad range of highway construction and maintenance activities, including pothole and patch repairs, footway reconstruction, kerbing, block laying, slabbing, concreting, linear drainage, iron works installation/repair, fencing, and excavating holes and trenches.
- Set up and maintain Code of Practice compliant traffic management on live highways.
- Operate and use plant, tools, and equipment safely and effectively (including ride‑on rollers, dumpers, telescopic handlers, 360 excavators, etc., where trained).
- Organise materials, monitor supplies, and ensure work is completed right first time, on programme, and to the required quality standards.
- Work in line with the Zero Harm culture, strictly following health and safety procedures, the 4 Golden Rules, and reporting all close calls and good practices.
- Support emergency service provision and winter maintenance (including gritting) both in and out of normal working hours, with flexibility to meet business needs.
- Contribute to the efficient use of resources to help achieve contract budgets and overall profitability.
- Provide excellent customer service as an ambassador for the company while working on site and interacting with members of the public and stakeholders.
- Carry out all reasonable work instructions and adapt quickly to changing priorities and situations.

Essential Requirements
- Proven hands‑on experience in key highway maintenance tasks, including:
- Footway construction
- Carriageway pothole and patch repairs
- Highway civils
- Linear drainage
- Iron works
- Concreting
- Kerbing, block laying, and slabbing
- Valid UK driving licence
- Strong commitment to health and safety, with the ability to work safely at all times
- Good teamwork, communication, and customer service skills
- Physical fitness and willingness to work outdoors in all weather conditions
- Positive attitude, reliability, and a willingness to learn and share knowledge
- Pride in delivering high‑quality work and continually improving performance
Desirable Qualifications And Experience
- Class 1 or Class 2 driving licence
- NRSWA accreditation
- 12D Traffic Management (T1/T2)
- CSCS Highway Maintenance card
- CPCS / NPORS plant certifications (e.g., Ride on Roller, Dumper, Telescopic Handler, 360 Excavator)
- First Aid, Abrasive Wheels, Driver CPC, or Winter Maintenance qualifications
- Experience of gritting roads and supporting winter service
