The Faculty of Human Social and Political Sciences (HSPS) IT team is looking for a technical manager to lead the Development and Infrastructure Operations team. The role involves providing day‑to‑day technical and operational hands‑on expertise for a four‑person team and its projects, leading from the front in developing and supporting the development and infrastructure needs of the Faculty and supported departments.
The team is an Agile, DevOps‑focused group that supports a variety of bespoke systems and services underpinning the teaching, research and administrative needs of the Faculty. It is built around a core technology stack that includes Python, PHP, Django, GitLab, SharePoint, MySQL and Postgres. The team also works with FileMaker collections databases, web portals for the Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology and the Whipple museum, and deploys all production services to the University Information Services Infrastructure‑as‑a‑Service platform. Jira is used for all development and project work.
Based in the centre of Cambridge, the role operates a flexible hybrid approach to working.
Responsibilities
- Lead the Development and Infrastructure Operations team, providing day‑to‑day technical and operational hands‑on support.
- Support the development and infrastructure needs of the Faculty and supported departments.
- Continuously improve existing systems and deliver new services with the team.
- Motivate, manage performance and promote the development of team members.
Qualifications
- Experienced technical manager with a proven agile, DevOps‑focused background.
- Strong technical expertise in Python, PHP, Django, GitLab, SharePoint, MySQL, Postgres and FileMaker.
- Proficient in using Jira for development and project work.
- Ability to lead, motivate, and develop a small technical team.
- Experience working in an academic environment is advantageous.
- Willingness to undergo a basic disclosure (criminal records) check.
