Project Commercial Manager – Balfour Beatty (@one Alliance)

Location: Peterborough / Hybrid

To help us deliver even greater value, control risk, and drive outperformance, we’re recruiting a Project Commercial Manager to lead commercial and cost management across a project (or portfolio) from inception to close‑out.

What You’ll Be Doing

Commercial strategy & procurement

  • Produce and validate robust estimates aligned to scope
  • Support commercial and procurement strategy alongside Senior Buyers, ensuring compliant tender processes
  • Prepare and manage subcontracts, ensuring they reflect agreed scope and are administered in line with contract

Cost management & performance reporting

  • Deliver accurate live forecasting, aligned to programme and reported against WBS/CBS
  • Monitor actual costs vs baseline, challenge variance, and drive resolution
  • Provide clear cost reporting, identifying root causes, trends, and corrective actions

Contract & governance

  • Ensure the Alliance contract is administered effectively (including NEC compliance)
  • Oversee timely issue of early warnings and advise the Integrated Projects Leader on compliance and commercial decisions
  • Maintain audit‑ready records and support cost assurance processes
  • Drive timely and accurate final account completion

Risk, opportunity & efficiencies

  • Ensure mitigation plans are in place, owned, and delivered
  • Proactively manage opportunities – identifying and implementing value‑adding actions
  • Track efficiencies and flag variances; report withheld/disputed/disallowed costs promptly

Team leadership

  • Lead and develop a small team – mentoring individuals and supporting growth and capability

Who We’re Looking For

We’re keen to speak to candidates who can bring a confident, commercially‑savvy mindset and thrive in a collaborative, high‑pace programme.

You’ll Ideally Have

  • Degree‑level education and/or RICS / CIOB / CICES (preferred)
  • Demonstrable experience managing complex, multi‑million‑pound projects/programmes
  • Strong NEC contract experience (and confidence in change, forecasting, and commercial governance)
  • The resilience to manage change and the confidence to challenge constructively
  • Excellent stakeholder management – able to build trust across multi‑partner teams
