NMGH New Hospital Project Safety Manager

Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust has ambitious plans to transform healthcare in North Manchester through the North Manchester General Hospital (NMGH) Redevelopment Programme which will deliver a new hospital and health campus at the existing North Manchester General Hospital site. This major investment will support the transformation of how we deliver our services and create modern facilities that support world‑class clinical care for our communities. This role provides a unique opportunity to be part of one of the largest public sector health transformation programmes being delivered across Manchester.

The NMGH New Hospital Project Safety Manager shall be an integral member of the Project Delivery Team responsible for planning, managing, coordinating and assuring health and safety across all the project and sub‑projects, providing construction health and safety advice and expertise during pre‑construction, construction and post‑construction stages, and which shall include undertaking site Health & Safety inspections and audits.

Main duties of the job

The NMGH New Hospital Project Safety Manager shall be responsible for ensuring the Trust complies with its legal obligations in relation to the management and delivery of construction‑related projects and specifically the Construction Design & Management (CDM) Regulations 2015 and the Building Safety Act (2022). The role shall also be responsible for managing specialist construction related professional advisers in connection with the delivery of the Project and ensuring that all other parties are compliant with legal obligations and that Projects within the remit of the Programme adopt and promote best‑practice safety measures and practices. The role shall be responsible for the drafting, management and review of specific H&S policies in connection with the delivery of the New Hospital Project and wider NM Programme, including the production of regular compliance reports and the delivery of general awareness training and briefings. The role is expected to contribute effectively to design and construction related meetings and be able to constructively challenge solutions providing alternative effective solutions to ensure the best‑practice health and safety is embedded.

Job responsibilities

Responsibilities include planning, managing, coordinating and assuring health and safety across the project, providing construction health and safety advice, undertaking site inspections, drafting and reviewing H&S policies, producing compliance reports and delivering training and briefings. The role demands proactive engagement in design and construction meetings, collaboration with specialists, and a commitment to embed best‑practice health and safety.

Person Specification

  • Degree in relevant discipline/construction or health and safety‑related discipline or demonstration of relevant transferrable knowledge and experience
  • Post graduate qualification to Masters level or equivalent experience
  • NEBOSH Diploma or similar technical or professional qualification
  • A thorough knowledge of the CDM regulations (2015) and associated legislation
  • Knowledge of the Building Safety Act (2022) and its requirements/application
  • An understanding of the design process and the principles of risk reduction in complex capital projects
  • Knowledge and an understanding of technical design processes, specifically the context of construction Health & Safety, and technical drawings
  • Knowledge of HTMs/ HBNs
  • Construction related technical design qualifications or equivalent experience
  • Experience and knowledge of design processes and good hospital design principles
