Role Summary
We are seeking a report writer with experience in SSRS and SQL to join the Student Records team in the directorate of Student and Academic Services (SaAS). The successful candidate will be responsible for the design and development of a suite of reports in support of business processes across the University, becoming an expert in the data underpinning these.
The Student Records team is responsible for the day‑to‑day management of the student record system (SITS:Vision), maintaining all processes supporting the student journey from enrolment to graduation, providing expert advice on the use of data and delivering a platform of extensive student and curriculum operational reporting.
You will contribute to the team’s output, ensuring reports are delivered on time to a high standard, playing a key role in development, peer review, sign‑off and deployment, as well as providing expert technical support to users, investigating and resolving technical problems when they occur.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead on development projects to develop the reporting provision for live student data.
- As part of a team, contribute to the implementation of the development and enhancement plan pertaining to reporting requirements across the University, ensuring projects are delivered to a high quality and on time.
- Working with other teams in the Directorate, across Faculties and where appropriate other professional services groups, liaise with customer groups to establish new and ongoing data reporting requirements and design and publish reports to a high quality and consistent standard and design that aligns with the strategic and performance aims of the University.
- Ensure that a standard set of population definitions are developed and maintained to provide a consistency in reporting of student data across all corporate information systems.
- Review and suggest improvements to business processes through developments and enhancements to student systems and work to implement these effectively.
- Provide expert technical support to users, investigating and resolving technical problems.
- Identify reporting needs throughout the duration of the student lifecycle.
- Deliver a high-quality level of user support, including resolving enquiries through the online helpdesk.
Qualifications
You will have extensive experience in the use of a corporate student record system, preferably within higher education. You will have experience in designing and writing reports using SSRS, with an advanced understanding of SQL and Oracle databases. You will have good experience in web technologies relating to the provision and delivery of information and ideally have experience in a similar role in a higher education environment.

Interviews for this role are envisioned to take place in the week commencing 11 May 2026.
The appointed candidate will normally be employed through our subsidiary company, BCU Support Services Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Birmingham City University. Appointees with prior LGPS membership who wish to re‑enter the scheme may do so and will be employed directly by the University.
