Part‑time (0.6 WTE) consultant child and adolescent psychiatrist in the Bethlem Royal Hospital Bedside Assessment Unit (BAU). The role provides clinical and medical leadership on the adolescent inpatient ward (12–18 year‑old, 12 inpatient beds and 3 day‑patient places) and works alongside another part‑time consultant, a specialist resident doctor, a core resident doctor and multidisciplinary staff.

Responsibilities

  • Clinical and medical leadership for the multidisciplinary team and junior medical staff.
  • Direct assessment of all admissions, formulation of treatment plans in collaboration with the MDT, liaison with clinical and non‑clinical agencies, and facilitation of discharge through the CPA process.
  • Provision of psychiatric input for routine and emergency clinical care of children and young people.
  • Supervision of junior medical staff; the post holder should be an accredited clinical supervisor or achieve accreditation during employment.
  • Attending and chairing clinical meetings on a scheduled timetable.
  • Liaising and communicating with the MDT, other professionals, teams, and agencies.
  • Provision of advice to other CAMHS teams.
  • Participation in peer and group supervision meetings.
  • Participation in training of medical students, psychiatric trainees and multidisciplinary staff.
  • Adherence to agreed job plan and appraisal procedures set by the Trust.
  • Maintenance of GMC registration, a licence to practice, and participation in CPD to remain in good standing with the Royal College of Psychiatrists; support to join or develop a local CPD peer group will be provided.
  • Maintenance of Section 12 and Approved Clinician approval; non‑approved candidates should obtain approval promptly.
  • Cover for colleagues (prospective).
  • Ensure electronic patient clinical records are well maintained and meet Trust documentation standards for communication with referrers and users.
  • Implement safeguarding policies and procedures throughout the CPA process.
  • Support the maintenance of a clinical database and submission of required records and statistics.
  • Participate in management meetings and apply quality standards in line with Trust Clinical Governance policies.
  • Act with integrity, honesty and probity at all times.
  • Assist in or lead research and evaluation activities aligned with departmental ambitions.
  • Take part in and lead audit projects, when appropriate.
  • Occasionally serve as a senior investigator in investigations of serious incidents and complaints.
  • Utilise provided office space, desktop and laptop computers, telephone and IT support; a full‑time administrator is available.
  • Non‑car drivers can access transport for essential clinical journeys, with travel expenses paid by the service.
  • Request study leave through Trust procedures (30 days per three‑year period).
  • Join a peer group and maintain a Certificate of Good Standing with the Royal College of Psychiatrists (RCPsych) CPD submissions service.
  • Seek support and advice from colleagues across the Trust, including those in inpatient and outpatient services.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Qualified and registered psychiatrist with GMC registration.
  • Experience in child and adolescent psychiatry, preferably within an inpatient setting.
  • Ability to provide clinical leadership and supervise junior staff.
  • Knowledge of and commitment to safeguarding, clinical governance, and quality improvement processes.
  • Willingness to maintain Section 12 and Approved Clinician status if not already in place.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills; ability to liaise effectively with multidisciplinary teams and external agencies.
  • Commitment to continuous professional development and CPD participation.
