Overview
Full Time / 37 Hours Per Week / Fixed Term for 2.5 Years. The role is for an apprentice working towards a recognised Level 3 apprenticeship as a gas service and heating engineer. Leicester City Council, which manages around 19,000 properties, seeks an apprentice to join the Housing team and carry out a variety of gas service and heating tasks.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Work in vacant properties that need repairs or rebuilds, or in customers’ homes to fix and repair gas and heating issues, which may be urgent call‑outs or scheduled appointments.
- Attend one day a week at Smart Gas (Lutterworth) to study theory that applies to the workplace, and complete coursework or exam preparation. Transport is provided.
- Work closely with tenants and leaseholders, providing advice and guidance while keeping them informed of progress.
- Operate in a variety of environments – cramped spaces, at height, outdoors and in all weathers – and maintain a high standard of work.
- After completing the qualification and End Point Assessment, progress into a qualified role if business needs and performance allow.
What You’ll Need
- Relevant experience in house maintenance or improvement gained through employment, work experience, voluntary work, home DIY, school or college courses.
- Mechanical reasoning and practical skills related to building and maintenance activities.
- Genuine determination, willingness to learn, and a strong focus on customer service.
- Ability to work as part of a team, maintain quality work, take initiative and lead when appropriate.
- Understanding of customer care and reflection of Leicester City Council’s values of confidence, clarity, respect, fairness and accountability.
- GSCE Level 4 grade C or equivalent (or willingness to demonstrate this via a test).
- Commitment to the apprenticeship programme, ability to manage time effectively, meet work and college deadlines, and literacy and numeracy skills for trade qualifications.
Additional Information
We welcome applications from look‑after children, care leavers and other under‑represented groups. The apprenticeship lasts 2.5 years from the date of employment, with various application stages from April to June 2026. Successful applicants must start on 7 September 2026.
