This role is best suited to an experienced revenue professional with strong communication skills, a deep understanding of legal‑sector billing and the confidence to engage senior stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

Work in Progress (WIP) Management

  • Take overall responsibility for WIP management within an allocated practice area, ensuring WIP days and lock‑up remain under control.
  • Lead regular partner WIP meetings to understand client fee arrangements (fixed fees, capped, conditional, contingent, volume discount) and to monitor WIP and billing activity for compliance.
  • Maintain comprehensive matter notes including expected recovery rates, billing timelines, risks, and aged WIP concerns.
  • Prepare and distribute WIP statements, exposure reports, and accrual information as required.

Billing & Financial Administration

  • Ensure all WIP is captured, reviewed and billed promptly, supporting fee earners with time‑recording queries.
  • Prepare and process departmental bills and credit notes, including complex multi‑matter and foreign currency invoices.
  • Review billing guides to ensure correct VAT treatment, accurate fee allocation, and compliance with firm policies before posting to the ledger.
  • Action write‑offs, transfers, time and narrative amendments as required.
  • Monitor and administer large external disbursements to ensure liabilities are covered.
  • Review client account balances monthly and liaise with partners regarding use or return of funds.

Analysis, Reporting & Process Improvement

  • Perform client reconciliations and provide financial analysis as required.
  • Proactively identify opportunities to automate reporting, improve processes or enhance overall efficiency of revenue control.
  • Offer guidance to fee earners and secretaries on billing best practice and highlight areas requiring additional training.
  • Review billing patterns for the practice area and suggest improvements to billing timeliness.

Knowledge, Skills And Experience

  • Experience working in revenue control or billing within the legal sector.
  • High levels of accuracy and excellent attention to detail.
  • Strong communication skills with the confidence to engage assertively with partners and fee earners.
  • Advanced Excel skills and the ability to produce clear reconciliations and data analysis.
  • A solid understanding of the Solicitors’ Accounts Rules and VAT legislation.
  • Strong organisation and planning skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities.
  • Experience with Aderant (preferred) and Intapp Time (beneficial).
  • A proactive, self‑motivated, tenacious approach with the ability to think commercially and problem‑solve effectively.

Benefits

  • Hybrid working – work remotely while maintaining a social boundary by working from our award‑winning offices for 3 days a week.
  • Holiday – basic annual entitlement starts at 25 days, with a discretionary paid leave day in December; you may purchase up to five extra days each year (pro rata).
  • Enhanced maternity and paternity leave – after one‑year service, up to 26 weeks paid leave if you or your partner give birth or adopt a child.

Along with these there are many more benefits we offer, including a comprehensive flexible benefits package.
