Role Overview
Hours: A variety of shifts including weekends and nights on a rolling rota. We are looking for an enthusiastic and organised Administrator to join our Urgent and Emergency Care (UEC) reception team. As the first point of contact for patients, relatives, and visitors, you will play a key role in ensuring the smooth and efficient running of both the Emergency Department and Same Day Emergency Care. This is a busy and fast‑paced environment; the successful candidate will be approachable, patient‑focused, and able to work well under pressure.
Please note that this post is subject to an initial probationary period of six months, extendable up to 12 months. A DBS check may be required for new employees. MKUH promotes an inclusive workforce and proactively welcomes applications from under‑represented groups in our community.
Responsibilities
- Act as the first point of contact for all visitors to the departments, greeting them in a friendly, helpful, and courteous manner.
- Obtain, check, and register confidential information from all attending patients, including updating any changed details and escalating multiple MRNs to be merged by the back office, in alignment with Data Protection guidelines.
- Assist patients with the use of electronic systems such as E‑Triage and Prescription Payment Kiosks.
- Deal with difficult, distressing situations and alert clinical staff to patients or situations that are cause for concern, e.g. chest pains, until a nurse is alerted.
- Organise paperwork and notes to maintain an organised department.
- Handle general enquiries via telephone and in person, including difficult and frequent emotional situations with patients, public, agencies, and staff; redirect when appropriate.
- Act independently without direct supervision to manage your own workload and organise the day‑to‑day running of your shift.
- Induct, mentor, and supervise new administrative team members, ensuring adherence to departmental procedures and fostering ongoing professional development.
- Empathise with vulnerable patients and people attending ED or SDEC who require language support or have any other disability or sensory needs.
Qualifications
Enthusiastic, organised, and patient‑focused with strong interpersonal skills. Ability to work well under pressure in a fast‑paced environment. Knowledge of hospital work and external agencies is desirable. Candidates should be willing to undergo a DBS check and be comfortable working flexible shift patterns including nights and weekends.
