The Bus Shelter Dorset is a charitable organisation committed to providing unconditional, non-judgmental support to rough sleepers in the Dorset area. Established in 2016 and based in Weymouth, the charity has grown from providing accommodation in a converted double-decker bus to operating ‘The Bus Stop’—a facility offering 12 self-contained units, a communal space, and round-the-clock, trauma-informed care. The charity also manages ‘The Next Stop,’ a move-on service designed to help individuals transition smoothly into independent living and avoid returning to homelessness. Guided by years of experience and lived expertise, The Bus Shelter Dorset takes a holistic approach to addressing the root causes of homelessness and empowering individuals to rebuild their lives.

Role Description

This is a 30 hour, 4 days per week, on-site role located in Weymouth as a Support Worker. The Support Worker will assist The Bus Shelter Dorset’s residents by providing personalised assistance to address their individual needs. Day-to-day responsibilities include offering emotional and practical support, monitoring residents’ well-being, helping them retain independent and safe living skills, and assisting with tenancy-related tasks. Additional duties include liaising with external services, safeguarding residents, maintaining accurate records, and contributing to the nurturing, trauma-informed environment of The Bus Shelter Dorset.

Qualifications

  • Experience as a Support Worker and in delivering tailored assistance to individuals in need
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to build trust, empathy, and effective relationships
  • Knowledge of safeguarding practices and ability to ensure residents’ safety and well-being
  • Technical skills to maintain precise records and work with any relevant software or tools
  • Understanding of trauma-informed care and experience in working with vulnerable populations is a plus
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team
  • Flexible and compassionate, with problem-solving skills to navigate challenging scenarios
