Secondary School Cover Supervisor

Are you looking for a dynamic role in a secondary school that uses your excellent communication skills and confidence without requiring a teaching qualification (QTS)? We are seeking enthusiastic and assertive individuals to join us as a Cover Supervisor.

This role is perfect for those considering a career in teaching, recent graduates, or experienced professionals who enjoy working with young people and maintaining a purposeful learning environment.

The Role: Class Management and Support

As a Secondary Cover Supervisor, your primary responsibility is to supervise lessons and manage student behaviour when a regular teacher is absent. You will not be required to plan lessons or mark work. Your key tasks will include:

  • Classroom Supervision: Oversee classes across Key Stages 3, 4, and 5 (ages 11-18) during teacher absences, ensuring students remain focused and on-task with work set by the absent teacher or Head of Department.
  • Behaviour Management: Effectively implement the school’s behaviour policy, maintaining a positive and orderly working atmosphere and dealing with any immediate issues or incidents promptly and according to school procedures.
  • Support Learning: Respond to general queries from students regarding the pre-set work, helping them access materials and stay engaged, but without providing subject-specific teaching.
  • Administrative Duties: Register student attendance and leave detailed, accurate notes for the returning teacher regarding the lesson progress, work completed, and any specific student behaviour issues.
  • School Ethos: Act as a positive role model, promoting the school’s values and maintaining high expectations for all students.

What We Are Looking For

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build rapport quickly with teenagers.
  • Strong behaviour management skills and the confidence to lead a classroom of secondary students.
  • Previous experience working with groups of young people (this could be from a school, youth work, coaching, or similar setting).
  • A degree is advantageous, particularly for those considering future teacher training.
  • Reliability, punctuality, and a flexible approach to working across different subject areas daily.
  • A firm commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.

What We Offer

  • A vital role supporting the daily operations and continuity of education in a secondary school.
  • Excellent experience in a classroom environment-ideal preparation for teacher training (PGCE/SCITT).
  • Opportunities for professional development and training.
  • Competitive salary/daily rate.

This is an ongoing, permanent role (or fixed-term, dependent on requirements).
