Wilts & Berks Canal Trust (WBCT) is a charitable organization dedicated to the restoration and enhancement of the historic Wilts & Berks Canal, spanning from Wiltshire through Swindon into Oxfordshire. The Trust aims to create a sustainable and biodiverse blue and green corridor that offers economic, environmental, and lifestyle benefits to local communities and visitors. Alongside its conservation efforts, WBCT seeks to provide a safe habitat for wildlife while preserving the canal’s historical significance.
Role Description
The Melksham Link programme is one of the four strategic programmes, linking the protected canal line to the Kennet & Avon canal at Semington. Boats will navigate a new 3km section through Berryfield and onto the River Avon at Melksham, bringing significant economic and wellbeing benefit to local communities, also enhancing biodiversity with a new blue green corridor.
The volunteer Chair of the Melksham Link Programme provides strategic leadership to support the project through its final stages toward planning submission and beyond. Working closely with a highly capable team and project manager, the Chair ensures alignment of vision, governance, and delivery.
Responsibilities include
- Providing strategic oversight as the programme progresses toward finalising the planning application
- Working with the board and CEO to develop the post-planning delivery structure, phasing and including building and shaping the future team
- Acting as an advocate for the project, engaging effectively with local authorities, town councils, and wider stakeholders
- Supporting strong governance and decision-making as a member of the WBCT Board of Directors
- We anticipate that candidates will have strategic and leadership skills and enjoy communicating with stakeholders and internally.
