Senior Radiographer/Mammographer

Overview

Candidates are to provide and maintain specialist Mammography services for Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Liverpool Breast Screening Service. The post holder could be based at either the Aintree or Royal site, with rotation across all Trust sites, including Broadgreen and the mobile screening units. This is not a training post and applicants must have the Post graduate award in mammography (or older equivalent) plus experience of working in the NHS Breast Screening Programme and symptomatic Breast Services. For radiographers with the post graduate certificate in mammography, this is an ideal opportunity to gain wide experience in all aspects of mammography, in a large newly formed Trust. We are a combined Symptomatic & Breast Screening centre, covering Liverpool, Sefton & Knowsley based across 5 sites. We have two Breast Units, one in Aintree Hospital and one in the Royal Liverpool Hospital building. We also have a static screening unit at Broadgreen Hospital and two mobile screening units, which move around 12 sites.

Staff can be asked to work across all sites. We can offer full and part time posts.

The Royal Liverpool University Hospital is the largest hospital in the country to provide inpatients with 100% single bedrooms and focuses on complex planned care and specialist services.

Responsibilities

• Provide specialist mammography and document clinical observations, using professional judgement for recall decisions and providing care across symptomatic and screening services.
• Work across all sites (Aintree, Royal, Broadgreen, and mobile units) with appropriate rotation.
• Participate in the day-to-day running of services, adjust and reorganise workload as required, and participate in multidisciplinary meetings.
• Maintain a Quality Control and Quality Assurance programme, perform equipment testing, interpret QA results, and take remedial action as needed.
• Ensure mammograms are of optimum diagnostic quality while adhering to time constraints and maintaining a positive patient experience.
• Provide support and training to Assistant Practitioners, Radiography Aides, trainee Mammographers, and visiting students; ensure health and safety and confidentiality.
• Contribute to development and drafting of departmental protocols and promote breast awareness; liaise with Breast Screening Programme Manager and Senior Radiographers.
• Document clinical observations, enter radiographic details into computer systems, and manage patient history information; participate in dose audits and other department audits.
• Assist in the appraisal process, ongoing professional development, and continuous quality improvement efforts.

Qualifications and Experience

• Post Graduate Award in Mammography (or older equivalent) with experience in NHS Breast Screening Programme and symptomatic Breast Services.
• B.Sc. degree in Radiography (or equivalent) with demonstrable post-qualification experience in general Radiography and successful completion of the Certificate of Mammography; M.Sc. (Diploma level) study or equivalent may be required.
• Training in IRMER 2000 regulations and adherence to department protocols.
• Continued Professional Development as required by HCPC registration; relevant short courses (Life Support, Fire Safety, Health and Safety, Caldicott Training, etc.).
• Knowledge of equipment operation, limitations, and QA procedures; ability to make technical judgments to achieve diagnostic value.
• Ability to communicate effectively with radiologists, surgeons, breast care nurses, and other professionals; capability to adapt communication for diverse patient groups.
