Overview
The Principal Medical Copywriter is a senior figure within the medical copy team and on client accounts. The role involves both medical copywriting and aspects of management. You translate scientific language into compelling, emotive copy for a range of medical audiences. You have strong scientific knowledge and communicate with clients, medics and colleagues. You help medical copywriters develop their craft, lead by example, and elevate the work. In this senior role you oversee quality content development, provide scientific guidance internally and externally, and motivate and inspire the team.
Responsibilities
- Write and guide persuasive copy for multiple formats, channels and audiences; translate scientific product data into compelling promotional narratives; craft story flows and apply tone of voice effectively
- Collaborate with account leads; ensure medical accuracy, writing standards, approval processes and quality control on key accounts
- Lead client and colleague interactions to support account management; advise on complex narratives and portfolio messaging; resolve difficult conversations constructively
- Work with senior creative colleagues to inform development of creative themes; ensure medical and creative alignment; uphold creative standards; plan and advise on tactical proposals
- Provide effective primary people management for direct reports; mentor and develop writers within account teams; give feedback and support; identify training needs
- Involve in resource management, training and recruitment; work with management to evolve and improve service offering
- Provide scientific and strategic counsel for clients and colleagues; maintain high profile as an expert across therapy areas
- Manage a broad range of account requests; identify threats to delivery and propose solutions; demonstrate resilience
- Understand brands and competitors; make proactive recommendations to drive organic growth; lead scientific aspects of pitches
- Engage with existing and potential clients to maximise selling opportunities
- Support strategic direction for existing clients and pitch work
Qualifications
- Extensive proven medical copywriting experience with leadership across multiple accounts; responsibility for maintaining high scientific and copywriting standards; development of junior and mid-level talent
- Solid scientific background (bachelor’s degree in life sciences or equivalent)
- Extensive experience within a health communications agency
- Expertise in healthcare communications and thorough understanding of industry regulations
- Exceptional attention to detail
- Strong relationship-building and communication abilities; comfortable advising others; adept at resolving conflicts
