Are you an outstanding Specialty Doctor looking for your next challenge in psychiatry and a competitive salary?
We are seeking an experienced full‑time Specialty Doctor who will provide psychiatric support to patients admitted at Cygnet Hospital Colchester and emergency cover for other wards.
You will be fully involved as a practising psychiatrist (Staff Grade Psychiatrist) while being fully supported by a Consultant Psychiatrist and a first‑class multidisciplinary team.
Cygnet Hospital Colchester is our 59‑bed service providing a range of intensive support and rehabilitation services for men with learning disabilities, autism spectrum disorders or mental health needs.
The aim of our services is assessment, stabilisation, treatment and engagement, with a view to supporting service users in the least restrictive environment appropriate to their needs. Our services are recovery‑focused, with the aim of preparing individuals for a move to rehabilitation or step‑down services, and ultimately, back into the community wherever possible.
Main duties of the job
- Provide routine medical and psychiatric support, including initial clerking and mental state examination of newly admitted patients.
- Carry out assessment, appropriate investigation, diagnosis and treatment under Consultant supervision of inpatients of the unit.
- Maintain good communication with ward nursing staff, mental health professionals and other agencies as required.
- Participate in weekly ward rounds and other multidisciplinary meetings, including CPA, Tribunal hearings & Section 117 meetings.
- Maintain full records of medical and psychiatric assessments and interventions.
- Prepare discharge summaries in line with company policies and guidelines.
- Attend all mandatory training (BLS, ILS, Breakaway training/PMVA training, Moving and Transferring, Infection Control, H&S).
- Communicate effectively through regular contact with patients, relatives, staff, directors and any other concerned bodies, maintaining appropriate reports.
- Participate in the on‑call rota in line with the needs of the region.

Qualifications
- Fully GMC registered & MBBS (or equivalent) qualified.
- Preferably approved under Section 12 of the Mental Health Act & a member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, or equivalent.
- Experienced and knowledgeable in General Adult Psychiatry and mental health diagnosis.
- Knowledgeable of the Mental Health Act, Code of Practice, the Mental Capacity Act 2005 and Code of Capacity.
- First‑rate communicator who can interview, assess & treat patients and write clear, comprehensive medical notes.
- Committed to continued professional development.
- Able to work as part of a multi‑disciplinary team.
