To be the company’s principal technical specialist in all areas relating to mechanical engineering. This includes working with members of the engineering department, other members of the company, and external bodies, as directed by the Technical Director, to assist with the development and maintenance of key competences in the Engineering Department.
Main Duties & Responsibilities
- To help with developing the Mechanical Engineering sector’s key competences required in the Engineering Department, as directed by the Technical Director.
- Where so directed by the Technical Director, to undertake in-depth investigations of new (to the company) mechanical technologies, equipment and systems in order to advise on the feasibility, desirability and the risks involved with developing them into engineered solutions.
- Act as a focal point in the leadership of technical matters relating to mechanical engineering (including contribution to research and development) advising others as required. This includes providing technical support and expertise to both Bid Teams and Delivery Teams.
- Where responsibility is assigned with regard to any mechanical technologies or equipment licensed or supplied, to undertake the role of technical liaison with the licensor or manufacturer. Responsibilities include ensuring that technology transfer into the company is maximised, and that an effective working relationship with the licensor’s or supplier’s technical staff is developed and maintained.
- To promote the dissemination of up-to-date knowledge (in the fields of mechanical engineering, equipment design, and related systems) to other engineers.
- Supporting those allocated the task of developing company-wide mechanical engineering standards to ensure that both national and client-originated standards are met.
- Where directed by the Technical Director, to participate in business development (including the preparation and presentation of technical papers for technical seminars), tender development and execution of projects to support the purposes of the company.
- To advise in the technical assessment and approval of mechanical equipment vendors and sub-contractors where specifically identified by the Technical Director.
- To support the Technical Director in the selection, training, development and auditing of Engineers.
- To comply with all Health and Safety responsibilities commensurate with the role, as outlined in the Health and Safety policy.
- Any other duties commensurate with the position as may be assigned from time to time.
Performance Measures
- Degree of technology transfer achieved with licensors or equipment suppliers.
- Quality of reports relating to mechanical technology investigation and development.
- Effectiveness of knowledge dissemination throughout the Engineering Department and wider organisation.
- Level of satisfaction reported by Bid and Delivery teams with respect to quality of support provided.
Qualifications / Skills
- Degree-level qualification (or equivalent) in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline (Essential)
- Corporate Membership of IMechE, CIWEM or similar professional institution (Desirable)
- Chartered Engineer, Eur Ing or similar status (Desirable)
- Significant relevant experience in the mechanical engineering field, commensurate with the level of the role, with demonstrable expert technical knowledge and expertise (Essential)
- Ability to use a wide range of IT packages including Microsoft Office (Essential)
- Able to work on own initiative with little or no supervision (Essential)
- Strong communication and presentation skills, both written and oral (Essential)
- Ability to work effectively within a team environment (Essential)
- Well-developed interpersonal, networking and relationship building skills, both with internal staff and external parties (Essential)
- Ability to keep track of technological developments within the mechanical engineering field, and maintain/present information on relevant applications to non-technical experts (Essential)
