Salary
£120,000 – £160,000 per annum (depending on experience) plus benefits (Pension Contribution, Annual Leave, Sick Pay, CPD)
Role Description
The post holder will be required to perform a range of anaesthetic procedures on patients referred to the treatment centre, working in accordance with hospital protocols and working practices based in Plymouth.
The post holder will be required to have completed a substantial number of procedures independently. Applicants will be expected to have an excellent clinical quality record and be able to demonstrate the ability to perform efficiently in theatre.
Applicants will also need to demonstrate a commitment to excellent teamwork with clinical colleagues, a willingness to utilise and develop clinical care pathways in the overall management of patients, and assist in improving these pathways over time, alongside maintaining a positive and patient-focused approach.
A commitment to provide out-of-hours on-call cover on a rota basis will be required, to be determined with colleagues. Opportunities may arise for additional clinical work beyond the basic contract.
The post holder will be expected to build strong relationships with surgical colleagues as part of a multidisciplinary team and participate in audit, research, and service management.
It is anticipated that the post holder will engage in management responsibilities and contribute to departmental and Clinical Governance meetings, as agreed with the Medical Director.
The role will include responsibility for the clinical supervision of junior medical and/or other clinical staff, and may involve responsibility for the management of specific consultant staff.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
Clinical
The successful candidate will provide a wide range of anaesthetic procedures, both general and regional. The main specialty is Orthopaedics, with additional work in General Surgery, ENT, and Ophthalmology. This is primarily elective work, except where postoperative patients require a return to theatre.
Attend outpatient clinics (OPD) on a rota basis to support pre-assessment of patients prior to surgery.
Participate in an on-call rota, ensuring availability and appropriate contact arrangements when on call.
Support Resident Medical Officers (RMOs) in patient assessment and provide specialist clinical advice where required.
Undertake all associated administrative duties, ensuring accurate, timely, and complete clinical records in line with confidentiality and governance standards.
Work collaboratively with local management and clinical colleagues to support efficient service delivery and contribute to departmental management.
Professional
Maintain Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and participate in annual appraisal in line with GMC revalidation requirements.
Engage in ongoing professional and managerial development.
Share expertise and specialist knowledge with clinical colleagues.
Ensure adherence to Infection Control policies.
Actively contribute to clinical audit, research, and Clinical Governance activities.
Report all clinical and non-clinical incidents promptly and cooperate with investigations where required.
Education and Training
Participate in the teaching and training of junior staff, RMOs, anaesthetic nurses, and other clinical groups.
Support continuous professional development within the wider clinical team.
Consultant Job Plan
A typical job plan comprises 40 hours of clinical activity per week, including occasional Saturdays, with flexibility as required.
5 hours of Supporting Professional Activities (SPA) per week are included.
The role requires flexibility to support service needs during colleague absence.
Annual leave entitlement is 25 days per year.
