Job Description:

We are looking for an enthusiastic Consultant Ophthalmologist specialising in Cornea to join our established team at the Oxford Eye Hospital. This part‑time 6‑PA post (5 PA clinical, 1 PA supportive activity) provides medical and surgical corneal sub‑specialist expertise for patients with acute and chronic corneal disease and trauma in emergency and outpatient clinics. It includes surgical intervention, management of referrals and patients post‑cataract, glaucoma and retinal surgery, and ocular surface pathologies. Participation on the consultant on‑call rota is mandatory. The post is a medical post with an aspect of surgical activity built into the job plan.

  • Provide medical and surgical corneal sub‑specialist expertise for patients presenting with acute and chronic corneal disease and trauma.
  • Deliver care in emergency and outpatient clinics and perform surgical interventions.
  • Manage new referrals and existing patients already under ophthalmology care, including those post‑cataract, glaucoma and retinal surgery.
  • Collaborate with other ophthalmology subspecialties and optometry as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Participate in clinical trials, research and teaching opportunities.
  • Serve on the consultant on‑call rota.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Full GMC licence to practice.
  • Medical degree.
  • FRCOphth or equivalent.
  • GMC Specialist Register or CCT, CESR in Ophthalmology.
  • Post‑CCT Fellowship in Cornea ophthalmology.

Desirable Criteria

  • Higher degree relevant to ophthalmology.
  • Experience leading a team of allied health professionals and junior doctors.
  • Ability to work independently, organise and manage clinical workload, work flexibly and as part of a team.
  • Good personal, interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
  • Computer literacy and experience in routine audit.
  • Knowledge of NICE guidelines for medical retina and NHS modernisation agenda.
  • Experience with Medisoft/MediSIGHT electronic patient record, Ufonia AI systems and patient communication.
  • Experience advising GPs and community optometrists.
  • Management training and experience.
  • Publications in audit or quality improvement.
  • UK professional registration.
