IT Project Engineer
This position plays a key part in delivering technical change across a wide range of customer environments. The Project Engineer takes ownership of implementing infrastructure, cloud, networking, security, and telecoms solutions within an MSP setting. The role blends hands‑on engineering with structured project execution, ensuring work is completed to a high standard, within agreed timelines, and with minimal customer disruption.
The role is primarily office‑based but requires regular on‑site attendance for audits, onboarding, project delivery, and complex issue resolution. Participation in an on‑call rota is expected to support critical incidents.
What You’ll Be Doing
Delivering Technical Projects
Execute infrastructure, cloud, networking, and telecoms projects in line with agreed scope and quality expectations.
Carry out installations, upgrades, migrations, and configuration work across servers, networks, Microsoft 365, Azure, firewalls, Wi‑Fi, and end‑user devices.
Complete readiness checks, risk assessments, and pre‑deployment validation to ensure smooth delivery.
Work alongside Project Managers to plan activities, provide technical insight, and meet project milestones.
Produce structured documentation such as implementation plans, configuration records, and completion reports.
Support customer go‑lives, cutovers, and out‑of‑hours activities when required.
Attend customer sites for audits, onboarding, project work, and issues that cannot be resolved remotely.
Technical Engineering & Solution Deployment
Configure and support Windows Server, Active Directory, Group Policy, DNS/DHCP, and virtualisation platforms (VMware/Hyper‑V).
Deliver Microsoft 365 and Azure solutions including migrations, identity, security, and device management (Intune).
Implement and troubleshoot networking technologies: firewalls, VPNs, VLANs, routing, switching, and wireless.
Support telecoms and VoIP solutions including Gamma Horizon, Giacom, SIP, and call routing.
Perform hardware installations, patching, upgrades, and infrastructure refreshes.
Ensure all work adheres to security best practice and compliance expectations.
Conduct detailed IT audits, assessing infrastructure, security posture, configuration standards, and operational readiness, with clear recommendations.
Customer Interaction & Communication
Act as the technical lead during customer engagements, ensuring clarity, confidence, and professionalism throughout the project lifecycle.
Deliver structured handovers to customers and internal support teams to ensure seamless transition into BAU.
Provide technical advice and recommendations to help customers plan improvements and adopt new technologies.
Represent the business effectively both on‑site and remotely.
Lead technical sessions such as audits, discovery workshops, and troubleshooting visits, ensuring outcomes are well‑documented.
Collaboration & Internal Support
Work closely with 2nd and 3rd Line teams to ensure technical alignment and project readiness.
Support escalations during complex project challenges or unexpected issues.
Coordinate with vendors and third‑party suppliers for installations, licensing, and technical support.
Contribute to internal standards, templates, and best‑practice documentation.
Share audit findings, onboarding requirements, and site‑visit outcomes with relevant internal teams.
Documentation, Governance & Quality
Maintain accurate documentation including configurations, diagrams, and change logs.
Follow MSP processes, change control, and security guidelines.
Participate in project reviews, lessons learned, and continuous improvement activities.
Maintain asset registers, licensing information, and configuration management data.
Experience & Technical Background
Required
3–5+ years’ experience delivering technical projects or advanced 2nd/3rd line work within an MSP.
Strong hands‑on capability with:
Windows Server (2016–2022), Active Directory, Group Policy
VMware or Hyper‑V
Microsoft 365 (Exchange Online, SharePoint, Teams, Security & Compliance)
Azure (identity, VMs, networking, Intune, conditional access)
Networking (firewalls, VPNs, VLANs, routing, switching, Wi‑Fi)
Backup & DR solutions (e.g., Acronis)
Proven experience delivering migrations, deployments, and infrastructure upgrades.
