Overview
As a Legal Counsel, you will play an integral role in the Legal Team of Sunbelt Rentals. Your primary responsibilities will include drafting, reviewing, and negotiating a wide range of commercial contracts, including but not limited to B2B customer and supplier agreements, tender documentation, data protection documentation, data processing agreements, NDAs and technology agreements. In addition, the role will have a strong focus on supporting the business in managing privacy and data protection risk, including compliance with UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act. The successful candidate will advise stakeholders on the lawful and responsible use of personal data and help embed strong data governance practices across the organisation.
Responsibilities
- Provide expert legal guidance and support on commercial issues within the business.
- Draft, review and negotiate commercial contracts and agreements and support tender submissions.
- Act as a legal adviser on data protection and privacy matters within the business.
- Draft, review and negotiate data protection related documentation including Data Processing Agreements (DPAs), data sharing agreements and privacy provisions in commercial contracts.
- Advise the business on compliance with UK GDPR, the Data Protection Act and other applicable privacy regulations.
- Support the business with Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIAs) and privacy risk assessments where required.
- Assist with the legal response to data protection incidents, including assessing legal obligations and regulatory reporting requirements.
- Positively contribute to the legal team, creating a professional, effective, high quality and approachable resource for the business, to facilitate a timely referral of relevant issues and queries to legal.
- Develop knowledge and understanding of the business to help identify any potential risks and work with the relevant parties to shape solutions that meet requirements.
- Conduct legal research and analysis to stay up to date with current laws and regulations and advise the business accordingly.
Qualifications
- UK qualified solicitor with 1‑4 years PQE (flexible) or demonstrable experience drafting and negotiating commercial contracts, with experience in data protection law or a recognised data protection qualification (e.g. CIPP/E, CIPM, or equivalent).
- Comfortable dealing with senior level stakeholders and operating with a level of autonomy due to the remote nature of the role.
- Pragmatic, thoughtful approach to problem‑solving.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to present key messages/complex matters in a clear, concise and engaging manner.
