Position Overview
The Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC) is seeking an experienced and inspiring Engineering Manager – Materials Technology to lead our Materials Technology Department within the Technology Group. This senior leadership role is based at our Coventry campus, and involves translating the strategic vision of the Component Manufacturing Group into effective departmental delivery. The Engineering Manager plays a pivotal role in translating the Component Manufacturing Group’s strategic vision into departmental execution, ensuring that engineering excellence, innovation, and capability growth remain at the forefront of our work.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead a team of around 30 engineers, overseeing day‑to‑day operations while shaping and delivering the department’s long‑term technology strategy.
- Ensure that departmental goals align with MTC’s five‑year plan, champion high standards of health, safety, and environmental performance, and drive continuous improvement through clear KPIs and robust governance.
- Accountable for ensuring high‑quality engineering delivery across a diverse portfolio of projects, maintaining consistent engineering practices, and ensuring compliance with internal and external standards.
- Oversee engineering project delivery, ensuring QCD targets and implementing strong technical governance frameworks.
- Manage recruitment, onboarding, development, and succession planning, fostering a collaborative, inclusive, and psychologically safe team culture.
- Champion continuous professional development using the 70:20:10 learning model, supporting capability development and clear pathways for progression.
- Lead the development of new technical offerings, developing R&D proposals, and driving capability growth via the Catapult network.
- Monitor emerging technologies, maintain strong relationships with industry, academia, and government, and ensure the department remains at the forefront of materials innovation.
- Manage a departmental budget of approximately £2M, lead financial forecasting, implement cost‑optimisation strategies, and oversee risk management processes.
Qualifications
- Strong grounding in Materials Technology or Engineering, with experience in advanced material processing such as metallics or sustainable materials.
- Proven experience in leading engineering teams and delivering complex projects.
- Demonstrated ability to drive continuous improvement, manage budgets, and lead risk management functions.
- Excellent communication, leadership, and people‑management skills.
