Chief Engineer – Secure Government Programme
Location: Corsham (Hybrid – 2 days on-site)
Rate: Up to £550 per day (Inside IR35)
Duration: Initial 6 months (likely extension)
Clearance: SC required
Lead Engineering Delivery in a Secure Environment
The Role
As Chief Engineer, you will take ownership of the design and implementation of complex data flows, connecting operational systems with analytics and BI platforms.
You will play a key leadership role in shaping cross-government data engineering practices—driving reuse, standardisation, and innovation across multiple teams and systems.
This role is particularly suited to individuals with a defence, military, or government technical leadership background, especially those experienced in complex, multi-system environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the design and implementation of complex data integration and data flow architectures
- Build and oversee data streaming systems and scalable data solutions
- Identify and promote opportunities to reuse existing data flows and models across teams
- Establish and enforce cross-organisational standards, design patterns, and best practices
- Coordinate multiple technical teams, ensuring alignment and delivery consistency
- Apply deep knowledge of systems integration across interconnected platforms
- Champion data engineering capability and best practice across government
- Guide teams in designing secure, interoperable systems and services
- Lead the full data development lifecycle, ensuring solutions are repeatable, reliable, and reusable
What We’re Looking For
Data Integration & Architecture
- Experience establishing cross-organisational data integration standards and design patterns
- Strong background in systems integration and interoperable service design
Data Modelling
- Solid understanding of data modelling principles, with the ability to create and govern models
- Experience aligning and reusing data models across organisations
Technical Expertise
- Broad and deep understanding of data engineering, integration, and technical architectures
- Ability to position solutions within a wider enterprise or government landscape
Data Development & Engineering
- Experience delivering end-to-end data solutions across the full lifecycle
- Strong advocate for best practices and reusable data frameworks
Data Security & Compliance
- Knowledge of data security, governance, and compliance frameworks
- Experience advising senior stakeholders on risk, ethics, and secure data practices
- Ability to lead teams in implementing and maintaining secure, compliant solutions
Stakeholder Engagement
- Strong ability to communicate between technical and non-technical audiences
- Experience managing senior stakeholders and navigating complex discussions
Innovation
- Awareness of emerging data tools, technologies, and techniques
- Ability to identify and introduce innovation at the right time
