This is a standout interim opportunity for a senior leader who thrives in complex, high‑profile environments. As Service Director – Environment & Waste, you will report directly into the Corporate Director and take full accountability for a wide‑ranging portfolio covering waste, environmental and regulatory services.
You will be stepping in at a critical point of change, with responsibility for stabilising services, leading senior managers through transformation and ensuring performance, governance and financial grip across the directorate. With a significant budget and high visibility at senior and Member level, this role offers real influence, pace and impact – ideal if you enjoy making things happen quickly and decisively.
This assignment requires a confident, politically astute leader who can balance strategic direction with hands‑on delivery, while providing assurance during a period of transition and contract mobilisation.
Your role as Service Director – Environment & Waste:
- Strategic leadership across waste collection, street cleansing and environmental services
- Mobilisation and stabilisation of major outsourced contracts
- Ownership of large, complex budgets with a strong focus on value for money
- Driving performance improvement, governance and accountability
- Acting as a trusted advisor to Members, senior officers and key stakeholders
Your previous experience as Service Director – Environment & Waste:
- Senior leadership experience at Director or Assistant Director level
- Strong background in environmental services and waste operations
- Proven delivery of service transformation or improvement programmes
- Highly developed financial, commercial and commissioning acumen
- Extensive experience operating within a politically led local authority environment
