We are currently recruiting for an experienced Business Rates Officer to join a busy Revenues team within a local authority environment.

You will play a key role in the administration, billing, collection and recovery of Non-Domestic Rates (NNDR), ensuring accuracy, compliance with legislation, and maximising income collection for the Council.

Key Responsibilities

  • Administer the billing, collection and recovery of Business Rates
  • Maintain and update Business Rates records to ensure accurate billing and collection
  • Open, close and amend Business Rates accounts
  • Process payments and set up Direct Debits
  • Apply reliefs, exemptions and discounts in line with legislation
  • Review, check and authorise refunds and adjustments
  • Maintain and update rating lists and property records
  • Trace absconded debtors and take appropriate recovery action
  • Determine and implement the most appropriate recovery action for outstanding debts
  • Deliver a high standard of customer service when dealing with enquiries

✅ Requirements

  • Proven experience working in Business Rates (NNDR) within a local authority
  • Strong knowledge of billing, collection and recovery processes
  • Experience using MRI / Capita Academy (Revenues & Benefits system)
  • Ability to manage a varied caseload and work to deadlines
  • Good understanding of Business Rates legislation and procedures
  • Strong attention to detail and organisational skills
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills

Desirable

  • Experience dealing with complex recovery cases or enforcement
  • Knowledge of Valuation Office Agency processes / rating list changes
  • Previous experience in a Revenues or Finance team within local government
