We are currently recruiting for an experienced Business Rates Officer to join a busy Revenues team within a local authority environment.
You will play a key role in the administration, billing, collection and recovery of Non-Domestic Rates (NNDR), ensuring accuracy, compliance with legislation, and maximising income collection for the Council.
Key Responsibilities
- Administer the billing, collection and recovery of Business Rates
- Maintain and update Business Rates records to ensure accurate billing and collection
- Open, close and amend Business Rates accounts
- Process payments and set up Direct Debits
- Apply reliefs, exemptions and discounts in line with legislation
- Review, check and authorise refunds and adjustments
- Maintain and update rating lists and property records
- Trace absconded debtors and take appropriate recovery action
- Determine and implement the most appropriate recovery action for outstanding debts
- Deliver a high standard of customer service when dealing with enquiries
✅ Requirements
- Proven experience working in Business Rates (NNDR) within a local authority
- Strong knowledge of billing, collection and recovery processes
- Experience using MRI / Capita Academy (Revenues & Benefits system)
- Ability to manage a varied caseload and work to deadlines
- Good understanding of Business Rates legislation and procedures
- Strong attention to detail and organisational skills
- Excellent communication and customer service skills
Desirable
- Experience dealing with complex recovery cases or enforcement
- Knowledge of Valuation Office Agency processes / rating list changes
- Previous experience in a Revenues or Finance team within local government
