TheClinical Nurse Educator post facilitates the development of Trainee GeneralPractice Nurses, Health Care Assistants and other health professionals withinIslington. The clinical nurse educator will provide support with clinicalskills and assist with the transitions in primary care.
Thetrainees on the programme are employed by the Islington GP Federation and aretrained at Islington Practice Hub sites, whilst providing direct patient careto any patient registered with an Islington GP Practice, so good communicationskills are essential when working across the sites.
The post holder will be requiredto travel across Islington to offer education and support to staff in theirpractice
The design and delivery of alltraining is in accordance with best practice and evidence-based care and allstaff are encouraged to work with the DOH 6Cs embedded within their practice.Attitudes such as compassion and respect for patients should also be assessedand modelled when the Clinical Educator visits the learners.
Main duties of the job
- Observationof trainees delivering patient care, followed by reflection and discussions.
- Discussionabout challenging cases and patients who are difficult to relate to or treat
- Facilitationof learning with regard to long term conditions, the prevention of morbidityrelated to them and screening protocols

Islington GP Federation (IGPF) is a growing organisation representing 31 practices; we have established ourselves as a leader in new ways of working, including running Islington’s extended access primary care services (I:HUB) as well as supporting the Islington Primary Care Networks (PCNs).
Our current range of services include the Extended Access Service, I:HUB, Community Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT), Integrated Community Gynaecology, practice-based pharmacists and a range of practice support mechanisms.
IGPF works very closely with a range of partners including the regional commissioning group, NHS England, Healthy London Partnership, Public Health, local hospitals such as UCLH, Whittington Health and the London Borough of Islington.
IGPF is the host organisation for the Primary Care Network (PCN) workforce and the Islington Training Hub and has been working for over two years to create training and development programmes that meet the needs of staff working in primary and community care settings.
IGPF runs four Islington GP practices, one on a GMS contract, two on APMS contracts and one caretaking contracts
Job responsibilities
- To provide educational support to Practice Nurses and other staff as requested by the Islington Education and Development Manager
- To work cooperatively with the General Practice teams in the facilitation of education for Practice Nurses and other staff.
- To work cooperatively with the University, so that the clinical components of each module are supported with appropriate input.
- To develop clinical education programmes demonstrating a high level of mastery, knowledge, skills and understanding of clinical assessment. The Clinical Educator will have this level of skill to be able to deliver to the standard required.
- Act as an expert resource and role model for colleagues.
- Exhibit advanced theoretical and practical knowledge needed for the role, knowledge must be underpinned by at least degree level education and a recognised post graduate qualification.
- Support the work of the General Practices and Training Hub in identifying training and development needs for clinical primary care staff.
- Support Practice staff who are managing those on training courses.
- Use and develop evaluation methods to inform and improve training outcomes.
- Develop training strategies to comply with national developments in advanced practice, prescribing, NICE and local guidelines regarding long term conditions management.
- Work alongside other members of the training team in a variety of settings to plan and deliver education events, programmes and courses.
- Consider the costs of planned programmes and keep within budgets as well as assessing the return on investment of any training within a development programme.
- Work within a team to produce programmes that are satisfactory to all relevant parties in Islington such as line managers, finance and senior managers at board level.
- Devise and produce training materials for in-house courses and assessments and employing flexibility and variation of teaching techniques to suit different learning styles.
- Assist employers and line managers in different settings to solve specific training problems, either on a one-to-one basis or in groups.
- Research a variety of information (e.g. courses, materials, training consultants, etc.) for the purpose of developing new programs and improving existing programmes that meet staff training needs.
- Understand e-learning techniques and how to facilitate e-learning.
- Prepare a wide variety of written materials (e.g. reports, memos and letters) for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written information, and/or conveying information.
- Keep up to date by reading current evidence and articles, and by attending meetings and relevant training courses.
Person Specification
Qualifications
- Current NMC Part 1 Registration
- Evidence of continued professional development at post graduate level
- Recognized and recorded qualifications in relevant clinical areas pertinent to Practice Nursing, e.g. Long-term conditions management, Cancer screening, womens health.
- Post Graduate Certificate of Adult Education
- ENB 998/997 or recognized teaching qualification at level 3
- Masters level qualification in an area relevant to clinical practice in primary care or Specialist Practitioner (Practice Nursing) /advanced practice recognized and recorded qualification.
Experience
- Experience as a senior nurse in a General Practice setting
- Minimum of approximately 1 year experience of teaching and mentoring a Practice Nurse or Health Care Support Worker
- Experience of supporting Practice Nurses attending accredited University courses.
- Evidence of design and delivery of education and teaching programmes
- Demonstration of leading/significant involvement in change management in a clinical setting
- Evidence of evaluation, audit and research related to clinical practice.
