Overview

Highway Design EngineerMy client is looking for a proactive and motivated Highway/Infrastructure Design Engineer to join their Engineering Design Team, based in either London or Manchester. This is a fantastic opportunity to get involved in a wide variety of high-profile and challenging projects, delivering innovative solutions across highways and infrastructure.

Responsibilities

  • Produce concept, feasibility, and detailed construction designs for highway and drainage infrastructure schemes.
  • Prepare planning stage layouts to support transport planning submissions.
  • Develop 3D designs and outputs using Civil 3D, in line with DMRB, Manual for Streets, and project-specific standards.
  • Create sketch concepts, drawings, and general arrangements to recognised design standards.
  • Assist with the preparation of contract documents and technical specifications.
  • Undertake inspections, surveys, and reporting, including site supervision of projects.
  • Provide coaching and guidance to junior engineers and CAD technicians.
  • Manage small projects or project elements, ensuring delivery within time and budget.
  • Contribute to commercial and technical project management to support efficient delivery.
  • Develop innovative design solutions that add value for clients.
  • Stay up to date with industry developments, sharing knowledge and contributing to the technical growth of the team.

Required Skills & Competencies

  • Strong technical background in detailed design for highway, drainage, and infrastructure projects.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and related software (e.g., AVT, KeySign/Post).
  • Experience with Section 278/38 highway approvals and Section 104/106 water industry agreements.
  • Good working knowledge of DMRB, Manual for Streets, and other relevant standards.
  • Awareness of DCG drainage guidance and Building Regulations.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a dynamic team.
  • Commercial awareness and an understanding of project delivery requirements.

Qualifications & Experience

Essential:

  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in highway/infrastructure design.
  • HNC with extensive experience, or BSc/BEng in Civil Engineering (or related discipline).
  • Membership of CIHT, ICE, or an equivalent professional body.

Desirable:

  • MEng in Civil Engineering or equivalent.
  • Ability to use micro-drainage software.
  • Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status, or working towards professional accreditation.
