Highway Design EngineerMy client is looking for a proactive and motivated Highway/Infrastructure Design Engineer to join their Engineering Design Team, based in either London or Manchester. Responsibilities
- Produce concept, feasibility, and detailed construction designs for highway and drainage infrastructure schemes.
- Prepare planning stage layouts to support transport planning submissions.
- Develop 3D designs and outputs using Civil 3D, in line with DMRB, Manual for Streets, and project-specific standards.
- Create sketch concepts, drawings, and general arrangements to recognised design standards.
- Assist with the preparation of contract documents and technical specifications.
- Undertake inspections, surveys, and reporting, including site supervision of projects.
- Provide coaching and guidance to junior engineers and CAD technicians.
- Manage small projects or project elements, ensuring delivery within time and budget.
- Contribute to commercial and technical project management to support efficient delivery.
- Develop innovative design solutions that add value for clients.
- Stay up to date with industry developments, sharing knowledge and contributing to the technical growth of the team.
Required Skills & Competencies
- Strong technical background in detailed design for highway, drainage, and infrastructure projects.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and related software (e.g., AVT, KeySign/Post).
- Experience with Section 278/38 highway approvals and Section 104/106 water industry agreements.
- Good working knowledge of DMRB, Manual for Streets, and other relevant standards.
- Awareness of DCG drainage guidance and Building Regulations.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a dynamic team.
- Commercial awareness and an understanding of project delivery requirements.
Qualifications & Experience
Essential:
- Minimum 3 years’ experience in highway/infrastructure design.
- HNC with extensive experience, or BSc/BEng in Civil Engineering (or related discipline).
- Membership of CIHT, ICE, or an equivalent professional body.
Desirable:
- MEng in Civil Engineering or equivalent.
- Ability to use micro-drainage software.
- Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status, or working towards professional accreditation.
