Job Title: Advanced Research Engineer – Additive Manufacturing

Job Type: Permanent

Working hours: 36 Hours per week

Salary: £40,000-£48,000 per annum DOE

The role

The Advanced Research Engineer (ARE) role is focused on the technical delivery of projects and support the development of project related activities across The MTC, working across various technology departments and industrial sectors.

This role will report into the Metal AM team lead, within the broader Additive Manufacturing team structure. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with colleagues in both the AM team and wider MTC to lead and/or deliver cutting edge research projects across a portfolio of industrial sectors. This role is also expected to work closely with the MTC’s AM Operations team in the AM facility to support delivery of practical project work and provide technical oversight.

This role will likely engage with project activities in the Defence sector and therefore, candidates should be willing and able to engage in work in this area and, undertake additional security vetting if required.

Main Responsibilities:


  • Largely independent supply of larger project's technical deliverables, and act as Technical Lead for smaller projects where required; ensuring work meets or exceeds agreed customer requirements, within agreed budgets and timescales.
  • Undertake innovative Engineering research work focused primarily on technology/manufacturing readiness levels (TRL/MRL) 3+, and able to demonstrate industrial project delivery.
  • To contribute to the identification, technical specification and delivery of new and novel technology capability into the MTC, customers, or industrial members premises.
  • This role will require involvement in all aspects of the project delivery including but not restricted to concept generation, detailed design, ensuring compliance with all relevant standards, technical support of commissioning, awareness of project budget and deliverables.


Person Specification

Essential Skills/Qualifications/Experience

  • Technical background and experience with metal Additive Manufacturing processes and materials (ie. Laser powder-bed fusion, DED, metal binder jetting)
  • Knowledge and experience of the following:
    • Design for AM
    • Build preparation
    • Build simulation and modelling
    • Inspection and quality for AM
    • Understanding of process parameters and their impact of build performance.
    • Experience in a R&D and/or operational setting(AC1) , working with customers to develop ideas and solutions.
    • Proactive problem solver, able to demonstrate agility and flexibility in their approach and technical skill set.
