Senior Chiller Service Engineer (Manufacturer - £55,000 to £60,000 + Benefits) - OTE £70K+

About the Role
We are a specialist chiller manufacturer seeking an experienced Senior Chiller Service Engineer to join our nationwide technical and commissioning team. This high‑level technical role requires deep knowledge of large tonnage chillers, advanced compressor technologies, and strong electrical diagnostic capability. The engineer will represent the manufacturer at customer sites across the UK and occasionally in Europe to perform:
- Major breakdown diagnosis
- Advanced electrical & refrigeration fault‑finding
- Compressor work (screw, scroll, Turbocore)
- Commissioning & performance validation
- Warranty support and technical investigations
This position is suited to a confident engineer who can work independently in a plantroom and take ownership of complex chiller issues.
Key Responsibilities
Chiller Service & Breakdown Response
- Diagnose and repair faults on screw, scroll and Turbocore chillers.
- Attend major breakdowns independently and restore plant operation safely.
- Carry out full refrigeration diagnostics including superheat, subcooling, oil management and system pressures.
- Perform compressor replacements, inverter/VSD troubleshooting, and control system resets.
Commissioning & Performance Validation
- Complete full commissioning procedures including nitrogen pressure testing, deep vacuum procedures, refrigerant charging, flow, ΔT and load validation, sensor and safety verification.
- Produce commissioning and performance reports to manufacturer standards.
Electrical & Controls Work
- Fault‑find electrical systems including contactors, sensors, inverters, VFDs/VSDs and control boards.
- Diagnose BMS communication issues and interface faults.
- Read wiring diagrams and follow sequence‑of‑operation documentation.
Customer & Manufacturer Representation
- Act as the technical face of the manufacturer on site.
- Provide clear and professional communication with clients, consultants and end‑users.
- Support warranty investigations and produce detailed technical reports.
- Maintain exceptional standards of presentation, documentation and compliance.
Essential Experience & Technical Requirements
Chiller Experience
- Experience with air‑cooled and water‑cooled chillers above 100 kW.
- Hands‑on work with screw chillers, scroll chillers, and ideally centrifugal systems.
- Experience working with leading OEMs such as Trane, Carrier, York, Daikin, Airedale, Blue Box.
Compressor Knowledge
- Screw compressor rebuilds, slide valve issues, capacity control diagnostics.
- Scroll replacements and fault diagnosis.
- Preferably experience with Turbocore magnetic bearing compressors.
Electrical Competence
- Strong ability to diagnose VSD/VFD faults, sensor failures, control logic issues, board/PCB faults.
- Ability to work safely on 3‑phase systems.
Refrigeration Technical Depth
- Understanding of the refrigeration cycle beyond installation‑level knowledge.
- Experienced in diagnosing oil return issues, floodback, non‑condensables, high‑pressure trips, etc.
- Competent in R410A, R134a, R32, hydrocarbon refrigerants preferred.
Controls & BMS
- Understanding of BMS input/output signals, setpoints, alarms and control integration.
- Experience identifying BMS‑related performance or communication issues.
Certifications
- F‑Gas Category 1 (essential)
- NVQ Level 3 Refrigeration & Air Conditioning (or equivalent)
- City & Guilds 2079
- 17th/18th Edition (highly desirable)
Work Environment
- Comfortable working independently on large critical plantrooms (hospitals, data centres, commercial buildings).
- Willingness to travel nationwide and attend occasional European factory training.
- Ability to participate in standby rota.
