Hydro Group manufactures bespoke subsea cable and connector assembly engineering for the oil and gas, marine renewable energy and defence industries.
We are certified to ISO 9001 and 14001:2015 to design and manufacture subsea electrical and optical connectors, electrical pressure hull penetrators, associated subsea electrical cable terminations, installation of electrical and optical connectors, specialist underwater and harsh environment electrical and optical composite cables, tethers and umbilicals. Our products are precision‑engineered to withstand the harshest environmental conditions.
Objectives / Scope
The Mechanical Design Engineer will be at the forefront of creating innovative electro‑mechanical systems, combining mechanical engineering principles with cutting‑edge technology. The role involves utilizing skills in Inventor, Vault, and MathCAD to develop and optimise mechanical designs, ensuring seamless integration with electrical components. The engineer will play a key role in bringing conceptual ideas to reality by collaborating with cross‑functional teams and contributing to the overall success of electro‑mechanical projects.
The Successful Candidate Will Be Involved In The Following
- Take ownership of live/R&D scope related design packages as assigned by the Lead.
- Lead associated draftsperson with the allocated scopes of work.
- Check design packages (drawings, procedures, calculations, spec sheets, etc.).
- Troubleshoot manufacturing/testing related issues.
- Support the wider team in training material creation.
Main Responsibilities
- Electro‑Mechanical Systems Design: develop detailed mechanical designs for electro‑mechanical systems, considering functionality, manufacturability, and integration with electrical components;
- Software Tools Utilisation: harness Autodesk Inventor, Vault, and MathCAD for version control, calculations, and efficient design iterations;
- Prototyping and Testing Support: work closely with prototype development and testing teams to translate concepts into functional prototypes and conduct rigorous testing, addressing any issues identified;
- Design Optimisation and Innovation: continuously assess and optimise mechanical designs for performance, cost, and manufacturability, proposing and implementing innovative solutions;
- Quality Assurance: implement robust quality control measures, conduct design reviews, and collaborate with manufacturing teams to ensure designs meet or exceed industry standards;
- Documentation and Reporting: generate comprehensive documentation (specifications, assembly instructions, validation reports) and provide regular progress reports to project management and stakeholders.
Skills Base
- A minimum 2:1 classification BEng or MEng in Mechanical or an appropriate discipline coupled with at least 3 years of relevant experience.
- Post‑graduate degree desirable.
- Advanced knowledge of Inventor, Vault, and MathCAD.
- Good understanding of engineering principles and data analysis.
- Project management skills to organise tasks, manage timelines and control budgets.
- Balance of technical, commercial and leadership experience to deliver technically complex projects on‑time, on‑budget and exceeding client expectations.
- Desire to make a difference and take responsibility and ownership of engineering activities and to drive continual improvement.
- Growth mindset to learn new skills and apply them to new and different applications.
- Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
