Job Description:

We are seeking a qualified and compassionate Trauma Counsellor to provide culturally responsive therapeutic support to individuals from diverse ethnic communities. This role focuses on delivering trauma-informed care that acknowledges the unique cultural, social, and systemic factors affecting mental health and wellbeing.

The successful candidate will play a key role in creating a safe, inclusive, and empowering environment where clients feel understood, respected, and supported in their healing journey. In addition to direct client work, the role includes contributing to the development and delivery of professional training.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Provide one-to-one trauma-focused counselling sessions as part of our Pathways to Hope programme.
  2. Deliver culturally sensitive and inclusive care tailored to clients from diverse ethnic backgrounds.
  3. Conduct initial assessments, develop care plans, and monitor client progress.
  4. Maintain accurate, confidential client records in line with professional and legal standards.
  5. Follow Trauma Healing Together’s counselling service policies and procedures.
  6. Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams and external agencies where appropriate.
  7. Work in partnership with the Project Officer to design, develop, and deliver professional training on trauma-informed practice and culturally responsive approaches.
  8. Contribute to workshops, training materials, and outreach initiatives aimed at improving understanding of trauma within diverse communities.
  9. Engage in continuous professional development and reflective practice.
  10. Adhere to ethical guidelines and safeguarding policies at all times.
  11. Promote Trauma Healing Together and raise awareness of trauma-informed practice among stakeholders and the wider community.
  12. Support the delivery of Trauma Healing Together’s vision, strategy and annual business plans.
  13. Undertake any other duties appropriate to the post in line with organisational needs.

Qualifications & Training

  • Recognised qualification in counselling at Diploma or master’s level.
  • Ability to speak multiple languages.
  • Knowledge of culturally specific therapeutic approaches.
  • Professional training in trauma-informed counselling practices.
  • 2 years’ experience post‑qualification of counselling individuals.

Experience

  • Experience working with individuals from diverse ethnic communities.
  • Demonstrable experience in trauma‑informed practice.
  • Experience of delivering training in a professional capacity.
  • Experience of carrying out initial intakes for clients.

Knowledge and Understanding

  • Strong understanding of cultural competence and the impact of race, ethnicity, and identity on mental health.
  • Awareness of safeguarding principles and ethical practice.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the BACP Ethical Framework.
  • Knowledge of the different trauma models and how they are applied in counselling.

Skills & Abilities

  • Confidence in presenting and facilitating learning for professionals and community groups.
  • Resilient and able to manage emotionally demanding situations.

  • Passionate about improving outcomes for trauma survivors.
