The Role

The Research Centre of Computational Science & Mathematical Modelling applies and develops methodologies in computational science to tackle real world problems. We seek to address challenges of the AI revolution such as explainability & interpretability, privacy protection, robustness, and governance. We value problem‑led research experience, technical expertise, and programming skills, but also seek individuals with a commitment to open science, a willingness to collaborate and work on trans‑disciplinary projects.

This role will increase the university’s capabilities in artificial intelligence (AI) / machine learning / data science. Your primary academic expertise will be in this domain, and your work will focus on applications in one of the university’s priority research areas: Health and Life Sciences; Defence and Security; Engineering for Sustainability; Agriculture and Water Resilience; or the Creative Economies.

A key research duty is to conceptualise, bid for, deliver, and lead impactful research projects in applied AI. We target traditional research funders (e.g. UKRI, EU) but also commercial funders via our AI Adoption Lab which seeks to secure Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTPs) alongside consultancy, contract research, and industry funded PhDs. You will also supervise projects by postgraduate research students, supported by our new Coventry Centre for Doctoral Training in AI.

The teaching component of this role will be via our new AI Skills Academy. Our Successful Candidate

You will bring exciting ideas for future research projects aligned with the existing areas of work in the university. You will use these to lead major research funding bids; as well as seeking income for knowledge translation projects, industry sponsored PhD programmes, consultancy, and contract research, bringing prior experience in some of these. You will have the research experience with either generative AI tools (e.g. fine tuning, prompt engineering, retrieval‑augmented generation) or machine learning tools (e.g. data preparation, model selection, optimisation, and evaluation).

You will already have a strong record of high‑quality publications, along with a strategy for future papers in line with the UK REF priorities of originality, significance, and rigour.
