Overview
Balfour Beatty is looking for a Principal OHL Design Engineer to join its exciting Power T&D Division.
Role Purpose
Lead the design delivery of Overhead Line Projects up to 400kV, from tendering to project handover, ensuring compliance with industry standards, customer requirements and Balfour Beatty governance.
Key Accountabilities
- Deliver the allocated Line Design scope of works to programme, budget and quality.
- Contribute to a culture of innovation and value engineering within the discipline.
- Embed Safety and Sustainability by Design in all designs.
Key Responsibilities
- Act as the OHL Lead Designer, responsible for delivery of tender deliverables and the project’s OHL scope of works and coordination of relevant resources.
- Identify and ensure design compliance with all relevant standards, legislation, customer requirements and contract specifications throughout the project lifecycle.
- Review tender or contract documentation and establish the OHL scope of works.
- Ensure application of best practices and lessons learned on all tenders and designs.
- Ensure all required designs, models and drawings have an adequate level of review, checking and approval, including suppliers and subcontractors, according to Quality Assurance processes and in line with Right First Time.
- Collaborate with designers from other disciplines under coordination of each project’s Engineering Manager.
- Embed Safety and Sustainability by Design on all projects, ensuring compliance with the latest CDM Regulations.
- Prepare the priced Schedule of Deliverables for the OHL scope of tenders, together with the associated Risk Register and list of Assumptions.
- Analyse and lead the resolution of design challenges.
- Ensure scope of works is delivered to programme, budget and quality.
- Interface with other stakeholders as required for project delivery.
- Ensure Document Management procedures are followed at all times.
- Generate and support initiatives to help drive technical improvements and new ways of working.
- Train, mentor and coach others and supervise their work.
- Participate in relevant external Technical Bodies for the discipline and promote their outputs and recommendations within the wider business.
- Act as a delegate for the OHL Design Delivery Manager as required.

Skills Required
- Degree level education or equivalent with formal training in Civil, Electrical or Mechanical Engineering.
- Expert level knowledge and understanding of Overhead Power Line design, with extensive experience as a Senior Design Engineer.
- Expert knowledge of UK and European design codes and standards for the Electricity Supply Industry, including SSE, National Grid, ENA Technical Specifications, BS EN 50341, IEC 60826 and other IEC Standards.
- Demonstrated expert knowledge of PLS-CADD and associated support packages.
- Familiarity with CAD packages used in Line Design.
- Proficient user of Microsoft Office packages such as Word and Excel.
- Chartered Engineer or working towards such status is desirable.
