Job Description:

Overview

We are looking for two people to join our Research and Development (R&D) Office at Southmead Hospital to develop new research across the Trust and manage a diverse portfolio of active grants. These posts are ideal for those who wish to build on their existing research management experience and contribute to evidence‑based patient care.

In These Vital Roles, You Will

  • Manage a portfolio of research grants from submission to funding bodies through to set‑up, delivery and close‑out, often working to tight deadlines and in close liaison with external partners including universities, charities and industry.
  • Be the first point of contact at the beginning of the research process, ensuring a well‑informed, coordinated support mechanism through the submission of grant applications.
  • Be responsible for the day‑day management of awarded grants, overseeing progress and expenditure against budget and supporting the dissemination of project results/impact.
  • Work closely with our Sponsor, Contracts and Finance teams throughout the life‑cycle of the grants to ensure all safety, regulatory, contractual and financial aspects are managed appropriately.

Research Support

  • Advise researchers on developing proposals, ensuring there is a sufficient gap in current knowledge and assisting in defining the research question.
  • Guide researchers through study design options.
  • Assist Trial Managers and research leads in constructing recruitment and event schedules to ensure feasibility.
  • Coordinate meetings to discuss the grant application and study progress as required.
  • Advise on sources of funding and assist with the preparation of external grant applications or cases for internal funding, facilitating support via the RSS of CTUs where appropriate.
  • Monitor the set‑up and delivery of active SHC Research Fund projects in liaison with lead investigators and research personnel.
  • Ensure research grant reports are submitted and reviewed in a timely manner.
  • Ensure the SHC Research Fund is appropriately referenced in publications and dissemination materials.
  • Capture learning from successful grant applications and best practice from the ethical approval process to feed into research skills training programmes.
  • Responsible for the costing of research grants to the SHC Research Fund (up to £20,000 per grant) and other funders (up to £250,000 per grant) in line with funder rules, using R&I approved costing templates.

Project Management

  • Liaise closely with lead investigators on all aspects of project management at all stages of the study to ensure an appropriate project plan is established.
  • Liaise with the R&I Office sponsorship and facilitation teams to ensure appropriate regulatory and governance reviews are carried out within the project plan.
  • Monitor progress of research grants against key milestones at appropriate intervals.
  • Produce study progress and/or finance reports for the Research Development and Grants Team and the funding organisations, where appropriate.
  • Organise a project team when needed, for example, identifying suitable co‑applicants and accessing academic input from the Research Support Unit.
  • Organise meetings of the Project Management Teams and follow up on agreed actions.
  • Ensure project management is costed into grant applications where appropriate.
  • Day‑to‑day administration of research grant income and expenditure for individual projects, against budget; liaise with finance to ensure cost centre set‑up, monitor expenditure and income against individual cost centres, reconcile statements against cost centres, and prepare and submit Expenditure Requests (ER) to the Southmead Hospital Charity finance team as needed.
