Job Description:

Key Responsibilities

  • Define and drive the overall test strategy for GOV.UK digital services.
  • Establish best practices, standards, and quality gates across projects.
  • Ensure comprehensive test coverage aligned with business and user requirements.
  • Act as the quality advocate across teams and stakeholders.

2. Test Planning, Execution & Governance

  • Lead end-to-end test planning, estimation, and execution across multiple releases.
  • Oversee functional, regression, integration, and UAT testing activities.
  • Ensure robust non-functional testing (performance, security, usability).
  • Monitor and report quality metrics, risks, and release readiness.
  • Design and own scalable test automation frameworks using industry best practices.
  • Define automation roadmap and drive shift-left testing approaches.
  • Ensure high-quality automated test coverage across UI, API, and backend systems.
  • Guide teams in using tools like Playwright, Selenium, Cypress, RestAssured, Postman.
  • Integrate automation into CI/CD pipelines for continuous testing.

4. Technical Leadership & Mentorship

  • Provide technical leadership in test automation and quality engineering.
  • Mentor and coach QA engineers on framework design, coding standards, and best practices.
  • Conduct code reviews and ensure maintainability of automation assets.
  • Drive adoption of modern testing practices (BDD, TDD, contract testing, etc.).

5. Defect Management & Quality Assurance

  • Establish and enforce defect management processes and SLAs.
  • Ensure effective tracking and resolution using tools like JIRA / Azure DevOps.
  • Analyze defect trends and implement preventive quality measures.
  • Communicate risks, issues, and quality insights to senior stakeholders.
  • Work closely with product managers, architects, and developers to define quality strategy.
  • Actively participate in Agile ceremonies (Scrum/Kanban) and drive quality discussions.
  • Collaborate across teams to ensure consistent quality practices.
  • Influence stakeholders and drive continuous improvement initiatives.

Technical Skills & Experience

  • 8–12+ years of experience in QA, with strong focus on test automation and leadership.
  • Proven experience in leading QA teams or projects.
  • UI Automation: Playwright, Selenium, Cypress
  • API Testing: RestAssured (BDD), Postman
  • Proficiency in programming: building automation frameworks from scratch, working with microservices architecture, testing distributed systems and APIs.
  • Strong experience with CI/CD tools (Jenkins, GitHub Actions, GitLab CI).
  • Strong experience with database testing (SQL, relational databases).
  • Solid understanding of Performance and security testing concepts.
  • Solid understanding of Quality engineering practices and DevOps integration.
