Position Summary

Magellan Aerospace in Llay, Wrexham (LL12 0PB) is seeking an NC Programming Engineer. This is a full‑time permanent role, 39 hours per week, on a unionised site in partnership with Unite the Union.

The role involves interpreting customer specifications and engineering drawings to design and program NC components, verifying programs, creating proof‑out sheets, and driving continuous improvement to reduce overcapacity on machines.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Engineer components using NC programming & verify them on all CNC machines.
  • Create proof‑out sheets and oversee prove‑out of new programs.
  • Interpret customer specifications and engineering drawings.
  • Design fixtures and jigs; construct solid models.
  • Document component parts to establish stable processes and machine runtimes.
  • Optimise existing processes to reduce quoted runtimes and meet CI targets.
  • Assist in engineering production process, material flow and machine utilisation.
  • Work within Health and Safety, environmental and quality standards; maintain 5S & 6S workplace.
  • Manage NC introduction of new products through the machine shop manufacturing system.
  • Co‑operate under tight deadlines and customer demands.
  • Coach and guide team members.
  • Collaborate with operations NC department and internal departments during programme introduction.
  • Generate technical reports for customers.
  • Provide hands‑on experience and practical application in the role.
  • Perform other duties as required by the Engineering Manager.

Position Requirements

Academic

  • HNC/HND BSc in an Engineering discipline or equivalent qualification.

Experience

  • 5 years’ experience in high‑speed machining.
  • Good understanding of tooling selection.
  • Experience at senior engineering level.

Key Competencies

  • Advanced Catia V5 programming.
  • Ability to read and interpret complex engineering drawings.
  • Experience with Vericut simulation software.
  • High level of numeracy and literacy.
  • Large‑scale component manufacturing knowledge.
  • Understanding and controlling material distortion.
  • Knowledge of optimal speeds and feeds.

Other Skills and Abilities

  • PC and Microsoft Office skills.
  • Project management.
  • Organised, methodical and a completer finisher.
  • Initiative and ability to mentor junior engineers.
  • Flexibility and ability to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Effective communication at all levels.
