All applicants must complete a basic application providing personal details and attaching any relevant qualifications. Successful submissions made before the closing date proceed to the next stage; otherwise the process terminates.
Leadership potential assessments are scheduled throughout May 2026 (subject to change). Each assessment includes a competency‑based interview and a scenario exercise. Two possible outcomes apply:
Applicants applying as inter‑service transfers (a competent Crew Manager) or as promotional candidates (a competent Firefighter) are evaluated under the same outcome structure. For promotional candidates an additional conditional offer is dependent on successful completion of the SFJ course.
SFJ courses run for four consecutive days at the Bury Safety Centre. Successful completion of the pass results in substantive promotions where required. Unsuccessful results will trigger re‑testing within a three‑month period.
We aim to ensure that our leadership and management teams reflect the diverse frontline workforce and communities we serve, supporting women, people who are ethnically diverse, LGBT+ individuals and those with neurodiversity. This pathway complements existing strategies to increase representation in management positions.
