Job Description:

Lead Environmental CoW (EnviroCoW) – Banniskirk Substation, Thurso

We are supporting a key infrastructure project at Banniskirk Substation (Thurso, Highlands, Scotland) and are seeking a Lead Environmental Clerk of Works (EnviroCoW) to play a critical role in ensuring environmental compliance and best practice on site.

Role Overview

You will act as the on-site environmental lead, ensuring all works are delivered in line with environmental legislation, planning conditions, and company procedures. This is a hands-on role requiring strong site presence, technical knowledge, and the ability to influence project teams.

Key Requirements

  • CIEEM Full Member (or equivalent) – essential
  • Named Lead EnviroCoW experience
  • Relevant protected species survey licences (e.g. bats, GCN, badger)
  • Strong background in infrastructure, utilities, or construction projects

Key Responsibilities

Environmental Compliance & Site Oversight

  • Carry out regular site inspections to ensure compliance with company procedures and statutory requirements
  • Ensure adherence to planning conditions, SEPA requirements, and the Construction Environmental Management Plan (CEMP)
  • Maintain accurate records to demonstrate compliance with legislation and contract requirements

Environmental Management & Advisory

  • Advise and support project teams in managing environmental and sustainability responsibilities
  • Identify required environmental consents, permits, or exemptions and ensure they are obtained
  • Promote best practice in environmental and sustainability across the project

Monitoring, Reporting & Improvement

  • Collate environmental and sustainability data for reporting
  • Review environmental performance to identify trends and areas for improvement
  • Implement environmental campaigns and improvement plans
  • Provide clear, evidence-based reporting to clients and regulators

Risk Management & Incident Response

  • Identify environmental risks early and recommend mitigation strategies
  • Assist with incident investigations and provide recommendations to prevent recurrence
  • Manage non-conformances and ensure corrective actions are implemented

Environmental Protection & Site Activities

  • Protect sensitive habitats, watercourses, soils, and species on site
  • Oversee:
  • Pre-construction surveys
  • Ecological protection and supervision
  • Peat and soil management
  • Water environment protection
  • Waste and pollution control

Engagement & Communication

  • Deliver environmental briefings and toolbox talks
  • Provide proactive guidance to contractors and site teams
  • Act as the key environmental point of contact on site
