Consultant Psychiatrist – Psychiatry of Intellectual Disability
Location: Stein Centre, Birkenhead (covering Wirral) and Cheshire (Adult ADHD service).
Contract: Permanent. Full‑time (0.4 WTE in ID + 0.6 WTE in Adult ADHD).
Hours: Full time, 10 sessions per week (+ 1 flexible patient area + on‑call supplement).
Salary: £109,725 – £145,478 per annum (pro rata).
Job Overview
Provide psychiatric input to adults with intellectual disability (18+ years) within the community. Key duties include psychiatric assessment, advice and liaison in diverse community settings, and development of multi‑disciplinary management plans. The post holder works with the Community Learning Disability team at Millennium Centre, Wallasey and has access to adult intellectual disability assessment and treatment beds at Eastways and Greenways units, with liaison for Wirral General Psychiatry beds where appropriate.
Main Duties of the Job
- Deliver psychiatric assessment and management for adults with intellectual disability.
- Provide liaison services and professional advice in community locations.
- Develop and support multi‑disciplinary management plans.
- Access and manage assessment and treatment beds as required.
- Collaborate closely with community health teams, social services, provider services and voluntary agencies.
Person Specification
- MbChB, MBBS or equivalent.
- Membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists.
- A CCT in Psychiatry of Intellectual Disability or within 6 months of completing the CCT.
- Registered with the Royal College of Psychiatrists for CPD or willing to apply for such.
- Qualification or higher degree in medical education, clinical research—or management.
- Additional clinical or post‑graduate qualification.
Eligibility
- Fully registered with the GMC with a licence to practise at the time of appointment.
- Included on the GMC Specialist Register or within six months.
- Approved clinician status, or able to achieve within 3 months of appointment.
- Approved under S12, or able to achieve within 3 months of appointment.
- In good standing with GMC with regard to warnings and conditions on practice.
