Description

The role of the Ophthalmic Assistant is to work closely with clinic physicians to perform basic, advanced, and complex functions. The Ophthalmic Assistant will document patients’ medical records and input any recommended treatments or procedures that may be performed by the doctor.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Obtain accurate patient history.
  • Perform lensometry.
  • Perform diagnostic testing of the eye (HVF, HRT, IOLmaster, biopen, basic fundus photography).
  • Obtain accurate visual acuities with basic optics understanding.
  • Perform functional ocular measurements such as color vision testing, B‑AT testing, Schirmer tests, and Amsler grid tests.
  • Conduct accurate and repeatable refractometry.
  • Administer topical ophthalmic medications.
  • Perform accurate tonometry by tonopen or applanation.
  • Maintain and sterilize surgical instruments.
  • Assist physicians with instillation of punctual plugs.
  • Verbalize post‑operative instructions clearly and professionally to patients for any procedure performed at Key‑Whitman Eye Center.
  • Understand basic ocular pharmacology, including names of medications and their uses.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills and Abilities)

  • Minimum 1 year medical/ophthalmic scribe experience preferred.
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Some college coursework or associate’s degree preferred.
  • JCAHPO certification preferred.
  • CPR certification preferred.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to think quickly and stay attentive.
  • Ability to work in a fast‑paced, team environment.
  • Effective communication with patients, physicians, and staff.
  • Commitment to ongoing education and uphold highest ethical principles, including confidentiality.
  • Proficiency in EMR and computer literacy.
  • Organized and attentive to detail.
  • Second‑language proficiency highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of and compliance with HIPAA.
