Our Opportunity

Hitachi Rail manages the Connect telecoms network on behalf of Transport for London. Connect is the operational telecoms system for the London Underground; it is critical to the operation of the Underground network.

The Hitachi team manages a portfolio of projects, large and small, to upgrade, alter and extend the Connect network. We are looking to appoint a new Project Engineer to support the delivery of this portfolio.

As Project Engineer, you will be responsible for planning and delivering site works in or for the railway environment. This includes a wide range of installation, testing, commissioning, and configuration activities across radio, fibre and transmission disciplines.

The role holder will work alongside a Work Package Manager, Design Engineers and other specialists to develop and implement project plans.

This role is based at Waterloo, working a minimum of two days per week from the office, in line with current SRS policy.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assessing task‑specific access requirements and making all necessary arrangements for the planned works to go ahead.
  • Writing work instructions, risk assessments, and/or method statements, which identify hazards and specify safe systems of work.
  • Allocating the correct combination of competent and certificated staff to complete planned works within agreed budgets.
  • Producing installation, testing and commissioning estimates for new projects
  • Managing and resolving on site quality issues such as snags and NCRs.
  • Managing materials including call‑offs.
  • Procuring and managing labour subcontracts.
  • Perform periodic site inspections to monitor progress on site.

Technical Skills and Experience

  • Proficiency in interpreting technical documents and transforming them into clear and concise work instructions.
  • Competence in evaluating complex situations and creating solutions that incorporate technical, logistical and interpersonal dimensions.
  • Ability to use digital tools to access and maintain detailed project records.
  • Skill to organise intricate tasks with various dependencies.
  • Capability to handle a significant and shifting workload through prioritisation and deadline adherence.
  • Knowledge of APM Project Management framework
  • Understanding of relevant technical standards related to the railway environment.
  • Experience working or planning works in a railway environment, London Underground and/or Network Rail.
  • Foundation of knowledge in telecoms and/or related disciplines.
  • Hold or be able to hold a range of safety licences related to work on track, in equipment rooms, or other rail‑related environments.

  • Effective prioritisation.
  • Excellent problem solver.
  • Able to context switch between large scale projects and nitty‑gritty detailed delivery.
