Overview

We’re looking for a Lead Systems Engineer to take a key role in delivering control systems projects across a range of industries. You’ll lead the design, development, and integration of technical solutions, working closely with the Principal Engineer or Project Manager to guide project teams and ensure successful delivery. In this role, you’ll mentor and support engineers, collaborate with cross-functional teams, and build strong relationships with clients to deliver high-quality, standards-compliant solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Review and approve complex system architectures, designs, and detailed specifications to meet client requirements.
  • Manage the integration of overall systems compatibility, performance and compliance.
  • Be accountable for system testing and validation routines to verify that systems meet design specifications and performance criteria.
  • Lead and approve the delivery of comprehensive technical documentation, including requirements, design specifications, test plans, operator manuals and quality documentation.
  • Analyse and translate client requirements into functional and non-functional specifications independently or as part of a larger team, checking against compliance standards.
  • Lead technical discussions with project teams and identify and resolve technical issues.
  • Plan and lead commissioning at client sites.
  • Coordinate testing and troubleshooting of bespoke systems.
  • Identify and champion changes and improvements as opportunities arise.
  • Identify training opportunities in line with project requirements, including mandatory training.
  • Provide coaching, mentorship and technical guidance to the team, fostering a collaborative and knowledge-sharing environment.
  • Support the maintenance and/or development of the client interface, including acting as the technical lead in project meetings with clients.
  • Contribute to technical sign-off during bidding processes, including approval of time.
  • Work closely with cross-functional teams (software, hardware, workshop and project management) to ensure successful project delivery.
  • Communicate and report to relevant stakeholders to ensure project success; accurately report on technical delivery, highlighting successes, failures and recovery plans.
  • Support resource planning, identify skill gaps, and assist with onboarding and induction of the team.
  • Identify welfare and wellbeing issues and communicate current and future resourcing needs, supporting recruitment as required.
  • Identify unacceptable or challenging behaviours and escalate as appropriate.
  • Successfully close out projects and ensure delivery aligns with the company quality management system, processes and procedures.
  • Have good knowledge of client-specific standards and international standards; act as the technical expert during quality and technical reviews and conduct reviews on peers.
  • Assist with other duties reasonably requested and deputise for the Principal Engineer/Project Manager when needed.

Qualifications and Experience

  • A minimum of 7 years’ experience in systems engineering.
  • Technical expertise in software packages relevant to the role (e.g., SCADA, PLC, HMI).
  • Experience in highly regulated industries and application of systems engineering principles and methodologies.
  • Familiarity with system integration processes, tools and technologies; good understanding of quality management systems, processes and procedures.
  • Experience of software development/hardware integration and working on client sites.

Skills and Abilities

  • Good verbal, written and presentation skills for effective collaboration and client interaction.
  • Ability to provide technical solutions in bidding processes, including estimating time.
  • Demonstrated leadership and management capabilities.
