Eligibility and Review Officer
Birmingham City Council – Children and Young Peoples’ Travel Service (CYPTS). Permanent position, 36.5 hours per week.
Overview
The CYPTS provides 6,000 children and young people with suitable transport to attend education. The Eligibility and Review Officer will support the statutory duty to deliver safe, efficient travel solutions and promote independence and sustainable transport.
Key Responsibilities
- Assess and plan travel support for families, ensuring eligibility for specialist travel provision in line with policies and procedures.
- Conduct physical risk assessments across Birmingham and the West Midlands, visiting schools and engaging with staff, parents, service providers and other professionals.
- Complete detailed risk assessments and provide clear, evidence‑based recommendations on the most appropriate mode of travel for eligible children and young people.
- Maintain accurate records, review and process information with strong attention to detail and sound judgement.
- Deliver a positive, solution‑focused service to customers and colleagues, promoting inclusivity and access for all.
Qualifications and Skills
- Good standard of literacy and numeracy skills, and knowledge of Microsoft Excel.
- Effective communication skills, confident in engaging with parents, service providers and school establishments.
- Strong attention to detail, sound judgment and the ability to review and process information accurately.
- Knowledge of relevant legislation, statutory guidance and local policies relating to Special Educational Needs.
- Understanding of challenges faced by children and young people with Special Educational Needs, Disabilities and medical conditions, including mobility issues.
- Familiarity with Education Health and Care Plans when assessing a young person’s needs.
- Experience providing service to a diverse range of stakeholders and promoting inclusivity.
The role offers hybrid working with travel across Birmingham.
