Test Engineer / Lab & Systems Support Engineer

Test & Infrastructure Team

Location / Working Pattern – Abingdon

  • Ideally 3 days on‑site
  • Team on‑site days: Monday, Tuesday & Thursday
  • Preference for local candidates due to lab needs

About the Role

This role exists due to a retirement at the end of May, and the team would ideally like someone to start before then to allow for a proper handover.

You’ll support a critical test and lab environment, maintaining both hardware and firmware testing infrastructure. You’ll also take ownership of a test lab where responsibility currently sits with someone who is leaving.

While primarily a hands‑on technical support and test role, up to 40% of the role can include development work – which would significantly free up senior team members.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain and develop test lab infrastructure
  • Build and configure PCs
  • Support firmware and equipment testing
  • Maintain existing systems and documentation
  • Light development work (where skills allow)
  • Act as a go‑to person for lab reliability and day‑to‑day technical support

Skills & Experience They're Open To

This role is intentionally flexible and open to different backgrounds, including:

Technical Skills (not all required)

  • Linux (essential interest)
  • Basic networking knowledge
  • PC building and hardware troubleshooting
  • Python and/or Bash scripting
  • Exposure to test environments or IT infrastructure

Backgrounds of Interest

  • Graduate (Engineering or IT)
  • Someone already working in IT who wants a hands‑on technical change
  • Candidates with A‑Levels or BTEC in IT
  • Practical mindset > formal job title
