Jersey CAMHS is recruiting an additional Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist to join a multidisciplinary team. This is an exciting time with a new service redesign and significant investment in the service. The successful applicant will work alongside existing consultants and will receive opportunities for private practice and to make a real difference to patient outcomes.
GMC Registration
Applicants must have full current GMC registration, a licence to practice, and specialist registration in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (or be within six months of achieving such registration at the time of interview). Full eligibility for section 12 approval (Mental Health Law Approval) is also required.
In‑patient Provision
There is no dedicated inpatient ward on the island, but the team provides flexible intensive care packages for children and young people with severe or complex mental health difficulties. These packages include assessment and treatment and are delivered in partnership with Paediatrics, Adult Mental Health and Children’s Services (Social Care). Young people may be admitted to Robin Ward (up to the 17th birthday) or orchard Ward for continuous observation if needed.

- Recognised Primary Medical Degree
- Full GMC Registration & Licence to Practice
- Registered on the GMC Specialist Register or CCT in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (or within six months of interview) confirmed by GMC
- Higher speciality training or equivalent experience
- Eligibility for Section 12 approval (Mental Health Law Approval)
Desirable
- MRCPsych or equivalent
- Relevant higher degree (MD, PhD, MSc or other clinical qualifications)
- Section 12 approval or equivalent
- Dual accreditation (e.g. Forensic, Learning Disability)
Responsibilities and Expectations of the Postholders
- Work with children and young people with acute mental health presentations, including self‑harm, suicidal ideation, low mood and psychotic symptoms, and support the team during periods of crisis.
- Diagnose and manage common psychiatric disorders using psychological and pharmacological therapies.
- Work with young people with mental health problems who have a history of alcohol and substance misuse.
- Provide consultation and liaison to other medical specialities, education, social services and other agencies.
- Develop and deliver training programmes for a variety of disciplines aimed at improving the level of expertise and the standard of care within the mental health services.
- Participate and contribute to the psychiatry teaching programme.
- Provide supervision for mental health and other professionals, and receive clinical supervision.
- Liaise and work effectively with others who provide services to children and young people as appropriate.
- Comply with Health and Care Jersey agreed policies and procedures.
- Work with managers and professional colleagues to ensure the efficient running of services and share the medical contribution to service management.
- Participate in clinical governance activities and quality improvement, including audit.
No requirement for Section 12(2) status, Approved Clinician status or DOL assessment. However the postholder must attend training to become an Approved Practitioner under the Mental Health (Jersey) Law 2016.
Population and CAMHS Caseload
- Population of Jersey (end 2024) estimated 104 540, with 22 910 under age 19.
- Number of open cases to CAMHS (end 2025): 1 885.
- New referrals received in 2025: 906.
- Postholder’s (locum) caseload: approximately 90. Most cases have an allocated care coordinator; new assessments average 1‑2 per week and follow‑ups 15‑20 per week.
- Daytime medical on‑call rota (9 am – 5 pm) for 1–2 days per week. Duty worker initiates contact if required.
Annual Leave, Study Leave and Job Plan
- Consultants are entitled to 30 days of annual leave, increasing to 32 days after seven years' service, plus bank holidays.
- Study leave for professional development granted through the Clinical Lead, approved by the Director of Medical Education. A generous study leave budget covers 30 days every three years.
- All consultants hold a 10‑PA contract for public work, which is non‑negotiable. The final job plan will be agreed by the Clinical Lead, Chief of Service and ratified by the Group Medical Director.
- The postholder’s job plan will be reviewed annually and appraised according to current guidance.
- All timetables adhere to Royal College Guidelines:
- 7.5 clinical programmed activities (PAs)
- 1.5–2.5 supporting professional activities (SPAs), including:
- 1 SPA for clinical learning and appraisal preparation (audit, teaching, case presentations, mortality reviews).
- 1 SPA for managerial activities, service development and quality improvement (subject to agreement).
- 0.5 SPA for other activities (to be decided).
- Some SPAs will be annualised rather than represented weekly.
