Are you an experienced practitioner or academic in social work, and a current practising Approved Mental Health Practitioner (AMHP), looking for a role that allows you to apply your specialist AMHP expertise and knowledge of contemporary social work practice in our programmes, informing the delivery of exceptional teaching and supporting student success?

The Social Work Programme within the School of Communities and Education at Northumbria University offers an opportunity to join a high‑quality team, delivering education across all levels from undergraduate to doctoral study. Working in the Social Work Team you will be part of a vibrant, multidisciplinary academic community committed to improving the health and social care of individuals and communities.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to an exceptional student experience through the delivery of teaching, practice sessions, knowledge exchange, scholarship and business & enterprise engagement activity.
  • Teach on undergraduate and postgraduate social work programmes, making a significant contribution to our Post‑Graduate Programme as an AMHP specialist and potentially to the wider School.
  • Support student recruitment through open days, interviews and act as a Personal Tutor for students.
  • Ensure the curriculum reflects the latest developments within practice, particularly in AMHP, demonstrating contemporary expert specialist knowledge.

Qualifications

  • First degree in a relevant subject and professional qualification or substantial professional experience in social work.
  • Evidence of registration with Social Work England (SWE) or eligibility/willingness to register with SWE on appointment.
  • Demonstrated contemporary expert specialist knowledge and subject expertise within the relevant discipline/practice areas, including AMHP.
  • Experience of designing, delivering, assessing and evaluating high‑quality teaching and learning practice, and evidence of contributions to contemporary practice development.
  • Qualified and practice‑experienced approved mental health professional (AMHP) – essential for participation in the PG Cert Approved Mental Health Professional Programme Team.

This role is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974; the successful candidate will be subject to a Disclosure and Barring Service check.

Location: Based in Newcastle upon Tyne with an optional London site; the position is on‑campus and offers flexible hours and location arrangements where the role allows.
