Role Overview

The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust welcomes applications for a Specialty Doctor within our busy Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery team. The principal role of the post holder will be to contribute to the delivery of a first‑class Upper GI service. The post holder will be based at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital with non‑resident middle‑grade on‑call rota responsibilities at the Princess Royal Hospital, Telford.

Key Responsibilities

  • Contribute to an out‑of‑hours on‑call rota.
  • Perform elective upper gastrointestinal and general surgery operating under the supervision of a consultant surgeon, including Robotic Assisted Surgery (RAS) bariatric surgery, benign UGI pathology and complex abdominal wall reconstruction (CAWR).
  • Manage an unselected emergency general surgery take and associated surgical procedures under consultant supervision.
  • Provide direct contribution to the regular review and care of surgical inpatients, working closely with the wider surgical workforce.
  • Provide surgical middle‑grade on‑call cover at Princess Royal Hospital for adult and paediatric patients under consultant supervision.
  • Develop enhanced clinical skills, especially in the assessment and management of acutely ill patients.
  • Demonstrate excellent team‑working skills and maintain a professional attitude within a multi‑professional team.
  • Deliver clinical and quality targets agreed nationally and locally with clinical teams and commissioners.
  • Follow patients throughout their clinical pathways.
  • Agree, on a prospective basis, a formal 10‑PA working week job plan within 3 months of starting, reviewed annually to outline duties, teaching, research, and managerial responsibilities.
