Overview

Base location: St Mary’s Hospital, Parkhurst Road, Newport, Isle of Wight, PO30 5TG. The role may require travel between sites; the frequency will be agreed locally.

The Specialist Research Nurse will be a key member of the Core Research Team, delivering high‑quality clinical research across a diverse NIHR portfolio that includes Critical Care, Microbiology, Cardiology, Respiratory Medicine and Urgent Care.

Key Responsibilities

  • Recruitment of participants, obtaining informed consent, and providing follow‑up care (face‑to‑face, ward‑based, clinic‑based or virtual).
  • Accurate collection and documentation of medical history, symptoms and data as required by study protocols.
  • Administration of investigational medicinal products and medical devices.
  • Collection, storage and management of samples in line with protocol requirements.
  • Adherence to Good Clinical Practice, the Human Tissue Act and trial‑specific regulations.
  • Supervision or line‑management of junior research staff where appropriate.
  • Active support of patient recruitment to meet NIHR targets.

Qualifications

Essential qualifications:

  • Registered Nurse (RN Adult / RGN) with the Nursing and Midwifery Council.
  • Degree in a relevant field.
  • Evidence of recent continuing professional development (CPD).
  • Clinical post‑registration experience.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and organisational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and flexibly within a supportive team.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • Phlebotomy skills.

Desirable qualifications:

  • Experience in management or leadership training.
  • Postgraduate qualification in research or a related health‑care discipline.
  • Good Clinical Practice (GCP) training for research.
  • Experience in project management or coordination of clinical trials.
  • Experience of leadership and management.
  • Experience of systems development and change management.
