JOB PURPOSE
- To ensure on time delivery of “Right First Time” compliant designs.
- To Lead the Mechanical Design activities within the engineering design department.
- Provide day to day accountability for mechanical design activities to department head.
- To provide advice and support to the sales and applications function in the tendering of work.
- To ensure work is completed efficiently to project timescales and to acceptable standards.
- To promote value engineering activity and cost reduction at all levels.
- To ensure staff work in accordance with company procedures. Maintaining relevant processes and updating as necessary to fulfil the business needs.
- Oversee General Engineering Governance.
JOB ACTIVITIES
- Monitor engineering progress and provide status reports to department head.
- Manage and review mechanical design resources to ensure availability of load and capacity to support business needs.
- To schedule resources and assign work tasks to the mechanical design engineers, including input to planning activities for Engineering, and support Project programmes.
- To provide the technical input for engineering purchase specifications.
- To generate technical reports, calculations and design schemes.
- Check and approve design schemes, customer calculations, subcontract technical submissions and ensure quality and consistency of submissions in line with current working practices and standards are maintained.
- Manage subcontract design from a technical aspect – to be effective and efficient.
- Maintain job records in accordance with company norms and practices.
- To ensure process and procedures are relevant, reviewed and updated where required.
- In line with business process organise and attend engineering / project meeting and reviews as necessary.
- Represent the Mechanical Design Engineering function at Customer site reviews.
- Maintain company records and knowledge base.

- Use IT packages effectively in the course of engineering activities (excel, word, mathcad, CAD, etc.).
- Interpret and approve engineering drawings.
- Generate concise and presentable sketches and reports for issue to a range of customers.
- Interpret and implement engineering specifications and standards to ensure compliance.
- Preparation of engineering calculations over a number of disciplines in support of detail design schemes.
- Perform concept and detail design work applying dynamic, mechanical, and thermo-fluid principles to generate optimum customer solutions.
- Design hazard identification and risk reduction.
- Liaise department head and other relevant departments to ensure correct levels of resource are maintained.
- Identify any shortfalls and work with department head to recruit / subcontractor as necessary.
- Monitor, report and authorise staff holidays, absenteeism and flexible working etc.
- Review and appraise the mechanical design team with consideration of competency, skills, succession and development.
Any other duties as may be reasonably required from time to time.

Education/Qualifications
- Mechanical Engineering Degree
Essential Qualifications
- Good pass grades at Advanced level mathematics and physics.
- IMechE corporate membership.
- IOA membership.
- Diploma in Acoustics and Noise Control.
Desirable Qualifications
- Experience of working to structural design codes.
- Knowledge of acoustic and noise control principles.
- Design of fabrication details.
- Familiar with the requirements of the Construction Design and Management regulations.
- Practical use of design techniques of hazard identification and risk reduction.
- Familiar with the requirements of European directives such as the Machinery directive and ATEX.
Knowledge/Experience
Essential
- 5 plus years’ experience in a responsible mechanical engineering position.
- Understanding of mechanical engineering principles.
- Experience in a senior team leading role.
Desirable
- Experience of working to structural design codes.
- Knowledge of acoustic and noise control principles.
- Design of fabrication details.
- Familiar with the requirements of the Construction Design and Management regulations.
- Practical use of design techniques of hazard identification and risk reduction.
- Familiar with the requirements of European directives such as the Machinery directive and ATEX.
