About the Role

We are seeking to appoint a Consultant Gastroenterologist as part of departmental expansion and continued development of specialised services, to help support more efficient outpatient service delivery and reduce diagnostic backlogs. This post is one of three new posts in the department and represents an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic and growing department practicing from a state‑of‑the‑art university hospital. The successful candidates will be expected to have or develop a sub‑specialty interest in Nutrition/IF, IBD, or Endoscopy to complement the existing team, and to share their expertise in supporting and developing a forward‑thinking service.

Responsibilities

  • Provide a comprehensive Gastroenterology, Hepatology, Endoscopy, and Nutrition service to patients in Coventry, Warwickshire and beyond, ensuring all appropriate waiting lists and waiting times are adhered to and services are provided effectively and efficiently.
  • See approximately 3 new patients and 8 follow‑up patients in each outpatient clinic, or 8 new patients if a virtual/2WW clinic, as per the standard clinic template.
  • Undertake unselected endoscopy lists booked to a standard template (currently 8–10 points per list due to COVID restrictions; will increase to 10–12).
  • Take responsibility for patients under your care.
  • Provide a consultation and advisory service to other clinical colleagues in other specialties within the Trust and primary care.
  • Participate in the development of the gastroenterology service, treatment protocols and guidelines, and contribute to greater knowledge in the management of gastroenterology conditions.
  • Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with medical colleagues in other specialties and participate in regular clinical meetings and other postgraduate activities.
  • Participate in the gastroenterology on‑call rota and the GI Bleed rota to ensure that appropriate emergency services are provided out‑of‑normal working hours.
  • Full participation in the education and training of medical students, trainee doctors, nurses, and allied health care personnel; interest and experience in undergraduate teaching is essential.
  • Take responsibility for the professional supervision and development of trainee doctors within the specialty, including the appraisal of F2s and SpRs, and issuance of Certificates of Satisfaction for F1s.
  • Demonstrate firm involvement in Clinical Governance, Risk Management and Clinical Audit, including the development and maintenance of appropriate systems and practices and regular attendance at the Gastro QIPS meeting.
  • Ensure own practice is up to date; this includes responsibility for own Clinical Professional Development and participation in the Trust’s Performance and Annual Review system.
  • Share responsibility for data protection arising out of the use of computers and comply with all relevant Trust Policies and Procedures.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Consultant rank in Gastroenterology with a sub‑specialty interest in Nutrition/IF, IBD or Endoscopy.
  • Experience in a wide range of gastroenterological conditions.
  • Interest and experience in undergraduate teaching; essential.
  • Commitment to clinical governance, risk management, audit and continuous professional development.
